The easiest and fastest way to fix this problem is to go to Acers website. This link is to the drivers page where you can download http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers. Install the synaptics touchpad drivers. This should fix the issue you have.
Installing a newer operating system on older computers, especially laptops, tends to cause compatibility issues like this. These problems are happening either because you don't have the necessary drivers to run the laptops hardware, or drivers for that hardware and the Windows 7 OS are nonexistent. You may be able to solve the problem by "rolling back" to whatever operating system the laptop was purchased with. But sometimes when these drivers are removed, by installing a newer version of windows the only way to get them will be contacting the manufacturer.
mate, mine doesn't work too and i'm a advance user,
installed new driver from acer.com, reformat and put Window 7 ultimate in and still doesn't work...
in the rare chance its work and most of the time it's not.

Please check the connection of the touchpad. Re-open your laptop again and double chech the connection. Re-insert the flat cable of the touchpad again for checking.
i did a system restore to take the laptop back to how it was before some automatic updates had taken place and now its working again.
ok, not the best solution i know, but at least its resolved the problem for now.
