Have the remote tested, it can be done easily without the unit, also most digital cameras in a very very dark room can be used--point remote at camera (with it on) and press buttons, you should see a tiny flash on the display screen of the camera.
If the remote tests good the remote receiver in the unit it operates may be bad.
Attached is a typical receiver, yours may not have the metal bracket and the item in the picture is actually less than 1/2 inch tall.
A slightly similar experience in that a Memory Stick Duo inexplicably set itself to write protect. No matter what I did, I couldn't format it. I was forced to buy another card.
If possible, test it with another card or two. If it happens with more than two or three cards, then I would suspect the camera.
