I have a Kirby G4 Vacuum Cleaner - MOdel G4 D. I have never had any problems or repairs done to it in the past ten plus years that I've had it. This is an upright vacuum. I was vacuuming the carpet floor and was not having any trouble at all. I switched the vacuum off and moved it into a different room. When I tried to turn on the vacuum, it would not turn on. I checked with different outlets, used both front attachment and hose attachment. Checked the front part of the motor/ spiral case. This turned around without any trouble. Check all options that I could think of, but am still at a lost why it doesn't work all the sudden.?? Help!! I was looking at the back of the machine and wondered if it could possibly be the foot switch--power on and off. There also is a flip switch for N & D - have always turned vacuum on when in Neutral position. Either way I have never had a power problem. My husband said he could put a new switch in, but would like to know if that sounds like the problem, or if there could be some other problem/s that I'm unaware of. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!!!! J.D.

Hello,
My educated guess is that it's either the switch or the power cord. Here are a couple of guides to help with diagnosis and repair...

How To Attach Carpet Shampooer To Your Kirby Generation 4 (G4) Upright.

Hello,

This is an excellent, easy to follow video presentation of attaching the carpet cleaner to your Kirby Generation 3 Upright Vacuum Cleaner. Please note that the model being used in the video is a newer model named the Sentria, but the process of attaching the carpet extractor attachment is identical on the Kirby Sentria and the Kirby Generation 4. The only major difference is that the Generation 4 does not have the lever that extends out to turn the belt to off. On the Generation 4 this is dont by turning the entire white square with the Kirby logo on it in the front of the vacuum cleaner.

Please feel free to ask for a repair clarification if you have a question on how to attach the carpet shampooer. I'm always, more then happy to answer any follow up questions there may be.

How To Replace a Belt on a Kirby Generation G3-Sentria Vacuum Cleaner

Greetings,

Below we explain how you can replace a vacuum cleaner belt on the Kirby Generation upright vacuum cleaner. All you will need to perform this repair is a new Kirby Generation Upright Belt, and some time. No tools are needed to perform this repair. This repair is the same for all Kirby Generation models including: G3, G4, G5, G6, Ultimate G, Kirby Diamond Edition, and the Kirby Sentria. The repair procedures have to be followed exactly in order for the vacuum to work properly. This should be done at least once a year even if the belt doesn't break, because these belts will stretch out over that year time period and will not work as well as a new belt would.

I hope that you find this video helpful. If you do, please be sure to rate this Tip as helpful by clicking the Thumbs Up Icon in the top right hand corner of the Tip.

Feel free to send me an email anytime if you have any questions on the repair of the Kirby, or any vacuum cleaner.

G4 model is burning

May be the carbon brushes. DO NOT run the vacuum until you check them. If they are worn out, they can damage your armature and that is expensive to replace. Try my troubleshooting guide. It helps with do-it-yourself Kirby repairs. You'll also find links to directions and free repair guides!
