Why does my freezer run continuously?

This freezer is just over a year old. We have been having intermittent trouble with it (unexplained sudden defrost) since new (March 2013. Now the freezer runs continuously, I have no idea for how long this was actually happening but probably months. I removed the back panel and noticed that the evaporator was totally iced up. If I rotate the thermostat dial by hand the freezer turns off and will then start up again as expected but then continue to run continuously. The fan is operating perfectly. I know that running continuously can be caused by the thermostat, fan, defrost timer or heater assembly. Given the above symptoms, which of these areas is likely to be at fault?

Thanks for the replies. It's a Maytag MQF2056TEW02. If it's low on freon would I still get the icing that I am gettingon the evap?

It seems that the heater and heater timer/thermostat is now all one unit as per this picture?

I tested the heater thermostat, after 20 minutes in a glass of water with ice cubes it would not show continuity. I have ordered the complete heater with thermostat assembly.

I should have it early next week and will report back here once fitted.

The new assembly arrived and I tried testing the heater thermostat in glass of ice and I could not get it too close.

Obviously it closes at a temp. lower than 32F. This made me think that this is not where the problem is so I took a look at the defrost timer. When rotated manually it switches correctly however the spindle does not seem to advance indicatin the that the clock motor is probably faulty. I have now ordered a defrost timer which will hopefully solve the problem.

I fitted the new defrost timer, through the clear plastic window I could see it immediately start spinning once the freezer was switched on, the old timer did not do this. Problem solved! Thanks.

SOURCE: freezer won't start after defrost cycle

It might be the timer motor, if it doesn't run. neither does the timer. Easily replaceable and cheap. good luck. John

SOURCE: Unit not freezing , evaporator fan wont run

If this is a Bev-Air, don't think the door switch will control the fan. At the evap, there is a temp sensor called a fan delay. When unit goes into defrost mode, this warms up. Some also serve a dual purpose. It will terminate the defrost cycle at a certain temp., say 51 degrees or so, at the evap. Anyway, when unit comes out of defrost, it keeps the fan off so it allows the evap to cool quicker and to prevent circulating warm air. This could be your problem. Not a hard fix but they can be a pain sometimes. Outside chance that the unit is low on refrigerant (freon). This will not let the evap get cold enough to trip the sensor back into position to turn the fan on. Good Luck. Restaurant Parts and More carry alot of Bev-Air stuff. 1-888-814-1110. Ask for Rick

SOURCE: evaporator motors won't run

Normally, freezers have electric heaters that are energized during the defrost cycle. Once out of the defrost cycle, the refrigeration system comes on but the fans do not. This allows the evap to cool off and to prevent circulating warm air from the heaters. This is controlled by a fan delay switch. It is a small, round device that can have 2, 3, or 4 wires going to it, depending on the manufacturer. It is usually clipped on to the end of the evap coil on one of the "U" bends, near the top, inside one of the ends of the evap. Usually where all the electrial components are located. It come in several variations, but it's main function is to prevent the fans from energizing too early. Usually does not bring fans on till evap hits 20 or so degrees. Check this out and get back to me.

SOURCE: Freezer runs continuously

not necessarily. If it's the t'stat, the unit would continue to drop in temp. If temp does not drop, it may be a dirty condenser coil or other issues. Don't just swap parts, check things out. use thermometer and check temp several times over a long period of time. If t'stat is bad, temp will drop continually as unit will not shut off.
Hope this helps.

Sub Zero 700 suddenly stops after 12 years. Compresser is burning hot.

The compressor will normally be 100 to 110 degrees. I would suspect the thermostat or mouse damage in the freezer area. Also, if you keep it overstocked, to the point of poor air circulation, you could just have ice blockage. Put the frozen food in a styrofoam cooler or a good heavy corrugated box and give the unit a good full defrosting.

Freezer has quit freezing only a little over a year old. manufactor date 6/2009 compressor is running will only cool down to 50 degrees thermostat set on coldest.

Is the compressor continually running? If so then there could be a leak in the system or the compressor is damaged. If it's running then stopping, the cold control (thermostat) could be damaged.

Feel compressor to see if running and warm. If not, most likely thermostat control is bad. If it is running, determine if it runs continuously or if it's clicking on and off every couple minutes. If clicking on and off, replace overload and relay that plugs into side of compressor. If running continuously, there is probably a freon leak on blockage. Replace freezer in latter scenario

Kenmore freezer deforsted suddenly. Comes on

compressor relay is probably going out...also check the plug in to the wall. A intermittant contact is a matter of following the source to the compressor. start at the plug and through the temp sensor/ t-stat defrost control and down to the compressor. but ususlly the compressor relay is the culprit.

I have an unexplained smelly zanussi fridge/freezer model Model zx99/5si? I have a zanussi frost free fridge/freezer model Model zx99/5si which is just 4 years old and it is now giving off a revolting...

Hi - we had this problem, and it was in fact where some blood from a defrosting pice of meat drained into the compressor condensation tank and began to decay!

I agree the smell is terrible, so a good clean up is needed but this solves the problem immediately!

Kind regards,

Freezer not freezing food even at highest setting

If the unit is running continuously and not maintaining the temperature cold enough the system may have a leak. If it is NOT running continuously the problem could be in the temperature control.
