It will not switch on when not connected to a PC.
Sometimes if the battery is discharged extremely it takes 10 to 30 minutes to charge up to a level at which the device can start up. In worst cases the battery can become dead in such a way that it can never be charged up any more. A general thumb rule I suggest you to follow, is: try not to keep li-ion batteries fully discharged for long time as this eventually kills them.
Computers provide low charging amperage, if you can connect your player to a wall socket usb adaptor if you have one. It may charge and turn on faster.

try pulling the batteries with nothing attached, the return batteries, power on, connect to PC. Ensure that the drivers for that USB port on the PC are working fine.
