I really would need a picture to be more accurate. If you have no way to hold the lid on to get suction, you have to replace the front bowl (pot) as that is where the strainer basket is and how the flow is created. That bowl (pot) unscrews from the front housing. You have to be able to free the suction pipe from the bowl and have enough room to spin the bowl off. You may also have to remove the pressure side pipe if you do not have enough room to turn the bowl (pot) off. If you can not get the bowl off of the front plate, you will have to replace the bowl and front plate all at once.

My Pentair Kreepy Krauly Prowler 820 moves forward a little, then back a little, then stops moving.

Found a few resolutions, hopefully one of these work

If you notice bubbles in the water returning into the pool from the eyeball/discharge, or water in the strainer basket is visibly swirling (bubbles visible) odds are you need you replace the o-ring on the lid of the strainer basket in the front of the pump. This basket may also be clogged with debris, which also effect pressure. Could also be a cracked or warped strainer lid. Should be easy to see when you remove to check o-ring. Once you remove the strainer o-ring make sure you lube it with a good silcone based lube.

Check your pump pressure on the suction side. If there is any air gap in your pump strainer pot (if you have a see thru see thru strainer cover) then you have a leak on the suction side. Auto matic cleaners need ample pressure for them to move. or you might need to backwaste the filter check your pressure gauge. If none of these help its more then likely the gears in the cleaner. also check your cleaners hoses

How to replace a Pentair dynamo strainer pot?

I believe the pot is screwed into the pump body/volute. Lift the complete pump enough to turn the entire pot counter clockwise, to unthread it off of the volute.

It sounds like you have a air leak on the suction side. I am assuming the pump is operating at full speed. Check for a cracked line especially around fittings. Try cycling the back flush valve as well. I hope that helps.

PAC-FAB / Pentair Dynamo pool pump parts, Discount parts for PAC-FAB Dynamo pumps

This site shows a separate part for the strainer body, but I'm not sure it is separate.
Call them with your model number and they can tell you if it unscrews and sell you the repair part that you need.
Worse case, you might have to see if you can remove the entire pump casing and purchase that.
