The phone behaves, as if it was falling asleep: it does not ring for incoming calls, but when I wake it up, such as by calling somewhere, it begins to behave normally and ring. However after a time of inactivity it falls asleep again and does not ring any more, until woken up. It's definitely not a DND issue. I suspected a misconfiguration, but mangling any obvious configuration options did not help. I even tried a factory reset and configured the device from scratch, but it did not help either. Looking forward to receiving any hints. Thank you very much for your help.

Is the phones registered to CallManager or CME?
if CM, then it could be because of partitions and Calling Search Spaces. PTs are placed on the line and are restricted by CSSes. http://cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/admin/4_1_3/ccmsys/a03ptcss.html#wp1020642
If it is CME, then it could be a configuration issue

It sounds like you have enabled Do No Disturb accidently. This can be turned on and off by pressing the DND softkey button along the bottom of the LCD display. You might need to press the 'more' softkey to display all options.
