Take top off.....look for a buldged capacitor on the circuit board that the power cord comes into first. That was my exact problem, and that was my exact solution. Just un-solder the blown capacitor, go to radio shack and buy a new one for $1.

You have a blown capacitor in your machine. If you are good with a soldering iron, great, you can fix it yourself. Otherwise, find a friend who is good with a soldering iron. Parts should cost you less than $2 for a new capacitor. Replaced the blown capacitor in my machine, and my stuck tape popped out with no fuss once I powered the system back up.
Enter the PSM (personal settings mode) and turn DEMO off.
1) Press and hold "SEL" until the display changes.
2) Use the left/right rocker switch until "DEMO ON" is displayed.
3) Turn the volume knob to select "DEMO OFF".
4) Press "SEL" to exit.
hello and yes it is a problem ipod's are'nt designed to be repaired because there so cheap for apple to make so with a cracked screen you have no option but to buy a new ipod sorry .even for the price that a 120 gig ipod cost thay just dont make them repairable.
