The "black" smoke has me wondering... I would suspect that you may have a broken ring on the piston, or even ha hole in the piston.
Several weeks ago I found two of my neighbors mowing lawn and pumping out heavy clouds of smoke. I went to each of them and they told me they just filled the oil. They filled it up until it came out of the dipstick hole. This results in too much oil in the crank case and not enough air, so the engine forces the oil past the rings and then you are burning oil with the gas producing a large amount of smoke. I took my turkey baster and a can to each and removed the oil until it was at the proper level. Then I showed them the dip stick and explained that the oil level must be between the two marks on the dip stick. This situation of too much oil produced a huge amount of smoke, but the smoke was more white than black.

First thing u might want to check is the governor--Make sure the spring and linkage is hooked up properly and the governor is moving freely.
