The "black" smoke has me wondering... I would suspect that you may have a broken ring on the piston, or even ha hole in the piston.

Several weeks ago I found two of my neighbors mowing lawn and pumping out heavy clouds of smoke. I went to each of them and they told me they just filled the oil. They filled it up until it came out of the dipstick hole. This results in too much oil in the crank case and not enough air, so the engine forces the oil past the rings and then you are burning oil with the gas producing a large amount of smoke. I took my turkey baster and a can to each and removed the oil until it was at the proper level. Then I showed them the dip stick and explained that the oil level must be between the two marks on the dip stick. This situation of too much oil produced a huge amount of smoke, but the smoke was more white than black.

SOURCE: Briggs 14 HP Vanguard runs well until PTO is engaged

First thing u might want to check is the governor--Make sure the spring and linkage is hooked up properly and the governor is moving freely.

Spark plugs foul immediately

Fouled plugs may be caused by oil leaking into the cylinder. Does it smoke when running (cold), are you using up the crank oil. Black smoke is excess gas comsumption, blue smoke is oil burning. If your plug is fouled with black carbon, you are most likely running to rich.

I have a 23 hp Briggs Vanguard that i have to run with the choke a quarter of the way on or it will die. What will cause this to happen?

It is starving for fuel. Replace the fuel filter first thing. Clean or replace the air filter. Also purchase a can of Seafoam or Techron fuel treatment. Follow the directions on the can and put some in a full tank of fuel. After running this full tank if you still have the problem then you may need the carburetor adjusted or cleaned out. I would advise you to seek professional help in accomplishing this.

Smoking and loosing power

Blue smoke means engine worn or too much oil in sump.
Black smoke is caused by too much fuel being sucked into carburettor.
This can be caused by a dirty air filter, choke being left on after engine is started or fault in choke system if automatic choke fitted.

27 horse power briggs on poulan pro. It smokes,

Very likely, the piston rings are badly worn or stuck. There may even be a small hole in a piston. In any case, you will need a major tear-down to repair this one. This is usually caused by lax oil-changes. It might be better to purchase a replacement engine than try to fix everything that could be wrong with the present unit if you take into account parts and labor. Hope this helps!

Briggs 12.5hp vanguard stopped n smoke at rear.

Its possible that the spark caused an in-line fuse to blow. Try following the wires from the battery to the ignition switch to the starter. There is probably at least one fuse in that path.
