A couple of reasons. First the carriage the tape sits in is damaged. Next the mechanism that moves the tape is damaged and can't except a tape. Lastly or perhaps due to the later, the mode switch is faulty or not in the right position. The mode switch tells the electronics which position the mechanism is in, be it play, fast forward or eject etc. If the switch is faulty and stuck in eject then it wont except a tape.

Hey Lindsay

SOURCE: TAPE WILL NOT EJECT
Try unplugging the player from electrical power for several minutes. Plug the player back in and try to eject the tape.
SOURCE: Tapes won't go down, and then eject.
You are more than likely using a pre-recorded tape and a timer programis set to record. If you are trying to record, make sure the protectiontab is in place.

SOURCE: Unit accepted cassette, won't eject
It is likely that either the drive belt has broken or is slipping. Because the unit is still in "play" mode, the mechanism won't let the door open up. If you have not opened up these units before, do not attempt it now. This unit should be taken to an experienced tech for repair. Where are you located?
