There is a very fast clicking sound in my IBM T30, like it is downloading or upgrading almost all of the time. It is not a mechanical sound, i.e., not the fan. When it is happening (which is most of the time) my computer runs VERY slowly. In the rare time that the clicking stops, the computer runs at a decent pace. I am planning to upgrade the hard drive and RAM but I fear the problem will continue. Any idea what is causing the sound?
Your hard disk might have physical bad sectors so replace it with the new one. RAM has nothing to do with this type of sound.
When it is doing it view the task manager and see what program is taking up the most recources. when this started had you installed any new anti virus or any indexing programs. also checlk avalible hard drive space if it is below 10% this can happen whit limited drive spave
WHen it is making the sound look at task manager under the process tab lookat the cpu list and find the program that is taking has the highest number then look at the memory usage. i would bet that there is something running in the back ground like an indexing service or a scan of some sort is going on there is always the posibility that you have a trogen virus. too. leave task manager up and when it starts making the noise look at what is taking the most out of your computer also make sure that you have the box at the bottom checked show process from all users

Thanks for the quick responses. You guys are terrific. Hard drive space is adequate: 15.6GB out of 35.6GB and I don't remember having installed anything when the noise started. If the problem is a bad sector in the HD would the sound be constant or would it stop occasionally, which is what it does?
