Right click on my computer.then left click (LC) on manage. go to disk management. if you dont see your drive try removing it and plugging it back in. if it does see it RC and LC on initiallize drive. you should hear a da dum from windows when you plug in a new piece of hardware. or whenit initializesthe drive. if not you have an internal problem with the drive. the drive may be fine but some of the electronic components can fail. you can try using a different external harddrive enclosure @ 15- 30 $. Does the drive light up. fi you get it up runnig you may want to consider bacing up the data you ext. drive may be close to failing.

My computer does not recognize my book 500. Is there any way to reset it?

Restore your computer to an older date (system tools / system restore). Try connecting your device into a DIFFERENT usb port after the process is complete.

WD 500 GB Passport Formatting error

you may have a FAT32/NTFS format problem between your wd500 and your pc. or differently formatted partitions. right click on their device letters on 'my computer' and look at 'properties'. should tell you how they're formatted and # of partitions, etc.

WD Mybook 500 GB does seem to spin, computer can't recognize it. Is it junk now?

The hard disk is not reading. Unplug it to prevent further damage. Don't worry in many cases you can have the data retrieved from your hard drive by using this online company that I highly recommend:
