U might have to go back to the control panel under display look on your left and click on connect o a projector and choose a option on how you want to see your screen

SOURCE: lcd screen black on laptop. External monitor works.

Defective CCFL backlight may has the following symptom:

  • Screen flashs on red/pink and off.
  • Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal.
  • Picture flickering with dim display.
  • Picture flickering on and off.
All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp)
has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp

Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

SOURCE: I Can't turn on my Dell Latitude D810 Laptop

From your description, it sounds like a motherboard failure. Generally about $100 on Ebay.

SOURCE: dell latitude D610. Screen goes black. External Monitor OK.

Make sure you have not accidentally used the FN+F5 key
That combination sets the laptop to use an external display.

If using that does not give you a display take a small torch (flashlight if in USA) and shine it at an angle on the laptop screen.
If you can see any sort of picture you would be looking at replacement of some minor parts to the laptop screen

Hope this gives you the information you need. If not add any extra information you may have and lets see if we can FixYa

When i start the computer the screen is black, and an external monitor will not work. what is wrong?

Major failure in the motherboard - the onboard video chip has failed. The only way to fix that is to replace the motherboard - a visit to a repair shop is mandatory.

When I turn my Dell Latitude D810 on the screen lights up just a second then goes black, then the Windows logo lights up just a second then goes black. I hear the windows music at start up and I hear it...

I would try taking the battery out and unplug it from the mains then hold the start button down for about 30 seconds then try again if no good try reseating the memory and if there is 2 sticks of memory try taking one out in turn and trying the other slot, or try starting it in safe mode (could be by continously pressing F8 on start up

Dell d810. replaced screen now its black.

Check the power inverter, they are a ten dollar part that starts the lcd like a ballast in a light fixture. That will usually be the culprit, it can be found usually on most laptops, near the frame that holds the lcd together, on the bottom. Take out the part and replace it. It just plugs in, you can google a part store that sells them in your area, or ebay also has many

System won't start up.

OK, your system appears to be posting but you have a NO VIDEO issue. Most likely the issue is a backlight failure of the LCD screen. If available, you can connect an external monitor to the VGA port and press FN+F8 to toggle between the LCD and the External screen (Wait 15 seconds between toggles)
The components are fairly easy to replace and available on Ebay.

Laptop screen colors are all muted.

Connect an external monitor to your laptop. If it displays beautiful colors that means you have a defective backlight/inverter/screen. Have it checked by a professional. It could be expensive to fix. You may think to buy another laptop.
