After the download unzip the zip file.
Explore in the folders for the folder Video Convert Tool:
Sylvania SMPK8858 \ SYL_SMPK8858_DRIVER \ SMPK8858 \ Video Convert Tool .
Install the convert tool by running (double click) the Setup.exe file inside that folder.
That video converter should make the format into the right one, so that it can play them. Good Luck!

If your CD is not working, then use a computer that has a working CD and copy the files off this CD disc to a USB flash memory stick. Then insert this USB memory stick into your computer that has the faulty CD drive and install the software from this USB flash memory stick.

When you've run the firmware update setup.exe file from CD or download use the AVIConverter.
After the update you'll find the program under Program Files \ AVIConverter.



With the program convert files with extension
WMV, RM, AVI, VOB or DAT into the fitting size AVI file for your player.

Do you have the CD for the SMPK8858 ?

Then put the CD into the CD drive or DVD drive of your computer and explore the CD, for the firmware update look under:
\Firmware Upgrade tool\ConsumerUpdate 3.1.2.0\setup.exe
1. explore or double click folder Firmware Upgrade tool
2. explore or double click folder ConsumerUpdate 3.1.2.0
3. run or double click file setup.exe: this will start the installation of the update software on your computer.

After the installation of the setup.exe file, run the firmware update program to start the update for your player.


Most Sylvania players will have a CD provided. When you don't have it, download the driver (a zip file) from Curtis:

now look for the firmware installation program under

I had loads of problems trying to add video files to my player. It wouldnt play the suggested AVI files but I hhad a brainwave and downloaded a free encoder called anyvideoconverter and converted the files I wanted to FLV and iot finally works! Yaaay!
