Microwave may have overheated

My daughter thought she set the kitchen timer on the microwave for 20 minutes but actually turned it on for that length of time. The plastic dinner plate cover we keep in there melted to a puddle and the microwave has no indication of power. Fuse is still good. Any chance there is a reset button or thermal protection diode that could be replaced or is this most likely done for ?

    Goldstar over the range MV1515w

  • birx Jul 14, 2009

Thank you for your help on this matter. I think I am getting closer to a fix but am stuck on a parts issue. On my model, Goldstar (LG) MV-1515w, I found that the oven cavity thermostat was still good, while the floor thermostat was bad. I can get this part. However, there is also a rectangularly shaped thermostat of sorts (temperature and voltage are stamped on it) which has two blades for wire in/wire out. This tested bad. It does not show up on the parts diagrams I have been able to find. I have taken pictures of it if there is a way to post them. It may be this is to measure the temperature of the wires rather than the ambient temp of the unit?

You had also mentioned that there was a thermostat on the magnetron. While the parts diagram shows one in that location, I do not have one on my unit.

It probably has a thermal cutout or thermostat that needs to be replaced. Please reply back with your brand and model number so we can help you.

There are two thermal protectors which may be blown. If so, it will measure open (infinity) instead of closed (zero ohms).

One is located on the magnetron and one is on top of the oven cavity.

(There is also one located on the floor / base of the microwave but that one's not at issue.)

The magnetron thermal protector *may* be accessible by removing the control panel, but to access the oven cavity thermal protector, you will have to remove the oven from the wall.

If so, the installation instructions here are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

You can order parts from Encompass here or you can call them toll-free at 866-779-5835.

How do you use the kitchen timer and cook at the same time?

If you have the kitchen timer set for instance for 10 minutes and it is counting down, and then you want to reheat you coffee for 2 minutes. You would hit either time cook or reheat button and enter 2 minutes ten hit start. The microwave will heat your coffee and show the 2 minute countdown for that. When done it will revert back to what is left on the 10 minute kitchen timer without missing a beat on most microwaves.

Kenmore 62463 / 721.62463201 Stainless Steel 1200 Watts Microwave. My daughter used it as a timer for reading and set it to cook for 30 minutes with nothing in it. It turns on but is loud and no longer...

You probably fried the magnetron(it actually makes the microwaves that do the cooking). I bet you will find the magnet is broken(from excessive heat). There should be a diagnostic guide sheet somewhere inside the housing(due to running production changes, this is a guide for the pros to test the power supply, magnetron, etc with an ohmmeter to determine which is defective.

My daughter wanted to run the timer on the microwave but accidentally ran the oven for 16 minutes. It overheated and blew out. Can this be repaired?

Your can be repaired, but it's generally not worth the cost. Running the oven empty usually destroys the magnetron tube which generates the microwaves. The tube is replaceable, but it's a costly part. And the repair should be done by a professional because of safety concerns. Between the cost of parts and labor, it's usually not much more (and sometimes even less!) expensive to buy a new oven.

While the kitchen timer feature of a microwave is handy, many people accidentally kill their ovens this way. You might want to pick up a small digital timer when you shop for a new oven. It's cheap insurance.

I THOUGHT I SET THE TIMER-YET I HAD SET THE

Hi,

Without food for the microwaves to be absorbed by, the magnetron (heating device) would have most likely overheated. There is a thermal overload switch (safety device) that acts like a fuse and turns everything off if overheating occurs like that. You would need someone that could take the microwave down, disassemble and check to see if the 'fuse' is bad or the magnetron is bad, they can both be checked with an ohmmeter. If you need to hire someone to do this, it may cost you more than the cost of a new unit if the magnetron is the item that has failed.

I THOUGHT I WAS TURNING ON THE TIMER AND WAS RUNNING THE MICROWAVE INSTEAD. IT GOT HOT AND SHUT ITSELF OFF. HELP

If it didn't come back on in 15-20 minutes you blew the cavity thermal fuse you'll have to have a technician replace it.

No... you are not in a microwave induced time warp...
Your microwave oven needs a "reboot". The same thing happened to me.
Unplug your microwave oven, wait about a minute (more or less), plug it back in. Try setting/running your kitchen timer, boil water, etc. Your timer software on the microwave should be reset.

Went completely dead

I would bet that instead of the kitchen timer's being on, the oven was running on high but empty for that forty minutes.

This would have led to overheating, which would have blown the thermostat on the magnetron.

Hopefully the thermostat did its job protecting the magnetron from damage, but 40 minutes running empty is pretty scary...

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.
