In that case the problem is inside it: when the unit works it heats up and a piece dilates, touching the ground and shorting everything. Or the part dilates and loses contact causing a loss of power.
Open the unit and look very carefully for uninsulated parts, exposed or weakened solderings and damaged wires.

Your friend is correct. The transformer may be shorting. Just smell the transformer and see if you smell burnt enamel. That typical smell when an electrical gadget gets burnt. If yes then you must replace the transformer. Only you must get one of exactly the same specs. And fortunately, these days you can get a much smaller and a heavier duty transformer than what you have presently. You can do it at home.
