Cooling systems on vehicles are pressurized to allow the engine to operate at more efficient (higher) temperatures. This is accomplished by fitting a radiator cap that allows the pressure to build as coolant heats up. You can check the pressure imprinted on your radiator cap to determine what the boiling point will be. At 10 psi of pressure, the boiling point of water is 240 degrees F. At 15 psi, the boiling point is 250 degrees F, and at 20 psi, the boiling point is 260 degrees F. So your engine running at 210-220 is probably within the design specifications of your engine.
Try changing radiator cap if there is no water in the oil it is not a head gasket could be system just needs a flush. It could also be the water pump is not pumping well try the cap first.
250 is not low, it is just about to boil over, coolant boils at 260 in a closed system, water boils at 120.Your car should not exceed 200, 220 max. Or just 100 degrees over the outside temp, like 87 degrees out, your car should be running at 187. Until you stop at a light and it idles for a minute, then it will climb.
Check bypass hose, on THE water valve to the heater core. The watervalve may not be returning the water back to the front of the engine the back of the heads are running too warm,it has to circulate in the bypass hose or through the heater core, common for chrysler v8,s .Bypass the watervalve completely to see if it runs cooler. If not,try to find a better radiator more cooling capacity!
Normal operating temp for any car is 150-170 F, Your thermostat is set for these amounts, water boils at 220 F and coolant boils at 260 F, but the boiling of anything in there is not good, it creates pressure, something is going to give. Your radiator cap has a temp on it too, about 165. It will bleed off the pressure before it explodes. So, you can check your thermostat, they do freeze up, check your coolant, don't run straight water. and then check the inside of your radiator, they do clog up. Hope this helps.
could be a problem with the blend door. common on explorers. open glove box all the way down (bend in tabs to where it will open further than normal) . take flashlight and look behind it to top of black box inside dash. should be able to see tab for door moving while changing the temp. on the control unit. if it is broken should be able to hear cracking or popping from inside heater case.
This could be a faulty surge tank cap, common problem. The cap is designed to hold 16 psi pressure,if it fails, the coolant will escape. The cap only costs a few dollars so it's worth changing it to see if this solves your problem.
The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor is located on the Left hand
rear corner of the engine, below the exhaust gas recirculation valve.
Also, the fans don't come on until the temp reaches around 225 degrees.
U didn't say the engine, if it is a 6cylinder then around 195-200 F, if a V8 they run very hot, around 225 F, so you have a problem, is the coolant clean? no rust present? I would suspect that you need the radiator pulled and roded out by a radiator shop.
