Convergence problem I'm having the same convergence problem as many others. Red outline etc...doesn't sound like something I can fix myself. Any ideas on an approximate cost to fix something like this? I don't want to bother with a repair if it is too costly i'll just invest in a new TV.

have tried auto magic focus & manual. Auto Magic focus stops before it has completed and a green 5 appears at the bottom of the screen. For the same problem on this site someone said that the convergence boards need replacing & it is not something a layperson could really do & to call a repair man. If this is going to be costly I would rather not bother. Just wondering about a ballpark estimate as to what something like this costs...thanks for the help

Have you attempted to set the convergence manually?
Consult your manual on instructions to do so.

The boards (one for each of 3 colors) are about $130ea if purchased new.
a good TV repair tech can diagnose the board that is faulty and only replace the failed part(s).
Labor rates are different in every part of the country.
$45/hr here in Michigan.
To disassemble, troubleshoot, repair, and re-assemble is approximately 3 hours work.
Depending on the problem found - you may squeak out with a bill under $300 (worst case).
Not much more - and you can have a HD LCD 49".
Your call :D

Blurring of lettering on bottom of screen

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2
Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects

I have a 61'' Panasonic tv that is showing green and red outlines around the figures on the screen. It originally started as just green outlines. Any ideas on what the problem is would be great. Thanks

The convergence is off. The convergence is basically the assimilation of the image on the screen from the three "guns" behind the screen. There should be a menu option to align the convergence in the image portion of the menu. If this does not fix the issue, then your convergence chip might be on it's last leg.

Same problem as above, picture bowed top and bottom, convergence

Projection sets have two very common problems outlined below.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. The TV can also shut down when the convergence starts to fail.

Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith, RCA and others.

How can I get rid of the red and blue outline on my tv?

You have one of two problems. Sometimes both.

Problem #1) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

2c07611.pngSolution #1

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Problem #2)

Your TV may have a convergence failure. ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses. Its a fairly easy DIY job or you can call in a pro. If you want to do the repair yourself check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc.
