We had this problem to but we were able to assemble with the help of a rubber band that held the switch on until the lid was locked in. Then you could use it the same way...pushing the rubber band down to engage the switch. I need to add though that since using this option...for nearly three months, The switch housing broke as well. I am now on the search for something to replace it I guess.
