SOURCE: MTD 12.5 HP Ride On Mower won't stay running

It could be a needle valve sticking or a mal-adjusted float but more common is a fuel filter that is restricted, once you use up the fuel in the line and float bowl it runs out and dies. A less common but easily tested issue is when the mower has run for the amount of time it begins to sputter and die, loosen the cap on the fuel tank just a bit, if it helps or resolves the issue the vent in the cap may be clogged.

SOURCE: Need to remove rear wheels to replace tires on MTD riding mower.

most likely rust has taken over
find some liquid wrench or pb blaster and spray the axles liberally and let it penetrate the axles and wheel hubs where the axle goes through.
use a 2x4 and a hammer to tap against the wheel hub to try to move it down the axle then tap in back on to try to free it up as the penetrating oil works in, spin the wheel and tap in different areas of it
the worst case cenario would be to use a torch and heat the axle and hub up and drive it off, but it sounds as though you are moving it some and with some patience they eventually should come off
when you put them back be sure to coat the axle with some grease and do not forget to reinstall the key stock in each wheel, if they have it
the bolt in the center of the axle is all you need to remove and note where the washers came from and where they go back.

hope this helps you some

My problem is that with about 2/3 of a fuel tank used the mower will stop.

I will assume the gas tank is under the seat and has a lift pump/fuel pump . Gravity is keeping fuel fed to the carburetor until the carb and the tank is equal or level .Check the vacuum hose that hooks the fuel pump and the block together, if all is good then it might be time for a fuel pump. Does my older lowes mtd riding mower have a fuel pump?

If it is a Briggs Twin it is part of the carb , if not it will be a vacuum pump somewhere close to the engine because it is driven by a vacuum hose hooked to the block . As the piston goes up and down the pulse of the vacuum moves a diaphragm in the pump to move the gas from the tank that is lower then the carb .

Push mower starts, then dies, ad nauseum

Guessing you have a briggs and stratton motor with a tank mounted carb.Remove the tank and carb. from the mower and replace the rubber diaphram between the carb. and tank and clean it while its off

Mower keeps cutting off... It seemed like water in the gas. so I took fuel line off , but no fuel is coming in from the tank. Is this a top draw? Why am I getting no fuel

it should have a gas tank under th seat and it has a fule pump that pulls the gas up to the carb that dosent mean the pump is bad you may need a carb kit

Gasoline in the crankcase

If, inside of the carburator the needle and seat does not close (dirt in carb) the fuel will slowly keep pushing through the carb,through the intake into the cylinder then into the crank case.
Do not run this engine until the carb. is rebuilt. The float in the carb.also needs checked to be sure it still floats and its at the exact factory setting.
Also have a new inline fuel filter installed.
Check for dirt in fuel tank.
Keep the air filter clean and in good condition.
I hope this helps you.

WONT START

Not so many reasons she won't start. 4-Strokes are Simple!

Here they are:

Motor:
Fuel Tank-> Fuel Line-> Fuel Filter-> Carb-> Intake (Valve)-> Piston-> Exhaust (Valve)-> Muffler

Carb (Old Style):
Fuel Side:
Fuel Bowl-> Float-> Needle Seat-> Fuel Ports (Venturi)
Air Side:
Air Filter-> Carb Air Intake-> Butterflies (2)
(Clean 'em ALL!)

Hardware (Motor):
Rotor (Magnets)-> Magneto (Ignition Coil)-> Spark Plug Wire-> Spark Plug-> Cylinder Head (Spark Plug Ground)

Ignition:
Kill Switches (Seat, Clutch, etc.)-> Spark Plug/Ignition Coil-> Ground
Key Ignition-> Battery->Starter/Generator

If one of those fail.......= Non-Starting 4-Stroke!

Fixes-
Fuel:
You are either getting too much, or too little. Too much = Carb.
Too little = Carb. Therefore, tear down the Carb (COMPLETELY-Careful!) and clean it up.

Electrical:
Grounding out the System (Kill Switches)
Battery-> Ignition-> Starter.
Magneto->Plug Wire->Plug (Check 'em all!)
