Need driver & software

The Driver and software are built in, Stored on the WD it's self..
all you need to do is plug it in. It is a plug and play device.

WD Passport is not supported on XP or Vista 64bit
Xp and Vista do not put enough power to the usb ports to fire up the drive.
there is a cable you can get from WD that plugs into 2 USB ports to solve this issue.

How do I completely remove the WD Sync software so I can use my 500GB WD external hard drive for manual copy-and-paste

Assuming you are using XP, Vista, or 2000 you can format it as a NTFS drive. while a lt of folks do not like Vista, this is one area where it really shines.

Plug in your WD PASSPORT.

Bring up the START menu -> right click COMPUTER-> select MANAGE -> select STORAGE ->select DISK MANAGEMENT.

Find the dive -> select/highlight the WD PASSPORT -> right click and select FORMAT. make sure to format as an NTFS drive. Depending on the size of the drive this might take a while - so go have dinner and a movie.

ESATA Connection problem with My Book & my laptop w/ Vista

Had the same problem with a WD esata 1TB drive and an HP DV6 laptop. Using Vista home premium. Lots of experimentation BIOS settings and driver update, and finally fixed it by trimming back a couple of mm of the plastic shoulders on each connector of the esata cable. A few depth measurements and it became clear that the connectors weren't going in deep enough otherwise. The cable was a Belkin of reasonable quality.

No problems now, but the drive is only recognized if it's connected at boot-up.

The core of the problem is the external casing of both the laptop and the WD drive enclosure. They're thick and keep the cable connector from going in far enough. Perhaps manufacturers of the cables or the esata devices are sloppy, or the standard isn't specified well enough. I've seen pictures of esata cables that have significantly different dept.

Dell Inspiron 1525 - Firewire not working

It may be the communication setup.

You might need to set within the Camera PTP protocol.

The WD drive specs out a 6 pin connector, not a 4 pin.

you'll need to go to their site, and find the most compatible. Please consider the WD Green drives, if at all possible.
