You can use vanilla extract or other extracts, your favorite perfume, other oils. Just not use anything with excessive chemicals, such as household products (pinesol, etc) Be sure and keep your unit clean, move stem that goes into water and use vinegar to remove any hard water deposits. It should last many years if taken care of. I am a Rainbow distributor.
Twist of stem from bottom, if excessive calcium or mineral deposits you can soak in vinegar. Keep hole in stem clean. Do not use harsh chemicals on any rainbow products it will compromise the materials. Vinegar should work.
The trim around the keypad needs to be pried off after removing all of the screws. I got into it but wasn't able to completely disassemble and fix the problem. The motor runs and it just goes click-click-click when it tries to open.
I run mine day and night while home and clean and re-fill it every morning. I also use one of the room odor eliminators in my Rainmate. Fill the water one inch above the line about an inch off the bottom of the water container.
