For almost a year now my car loses power and backfired loudly. Sometimes it needs a tow as it will not restart but today it ran until I got it home about 5 miles. I had it running today for a good hour on the highway and side roads without incident until I was heading home. I've had two fuel pumps replaced an also the ignition switch, wires cleaned and replaced when necessary but the car is still backfiring and losing power. Please help!

My first instinct tells me timing chain or belt, but it could be a vacuum line loose, cracked or disconnected. Using a stethoscope, or a length of gasline hose held to your ear, and with the engine running, listen for a hissing sound. Be sure and wiggle all the hoses you can. You might make one hiss. If you don't find anything, get a timing light, and check your timing marks. They should stay in basically one spot. If it's jumping around a lot, you need a new timing chain or belt. Good luck.

Try cleaning the fuel pump filter. Under the seat behind the driver lift the carpet and you will find a round cover with six screws remove the cover. The fuel pump is directly below unscrew the retaining round plate and remove the pump. At the base of the pump is a small filter if it is covered in black muck that's your problem. clean and replace. job takes about 10 mins good luck. please let me know how you got on!

check and clean the idle control unit. It is located on top on the engine and it as a black knob. It is well known that it gets stuck all the time. It needs replacement or cleaning

Fuel injected or carb? Make sure fuel line itself is clear. Some pumps are designed to self regulate (carb systems) some continually pump and a psi regulator sends back the excess fuel back to the tank (fuel inj systems) If the line is obstructed then pump can't deliver fuel fulltime.
If you think pump is not on consistent, try running a dedicated wire through a switch directly to the pump. If it works then you are looking for an electrical fault going to pump. Good luck.
