google and type in-- manufacturer of ( make and model) hard drive
when that site comes up look for a web page for the manufacturer that has driver downloads
select the model and download the driver
so if it is best western make as an example
google best western model xyz( what ever it is )
best western pages will come up and one will show up as drivers and software downloads and updates
click on that then select downloads and high light the model
click on down load
that will put the driver onto your computer
when downloaded , click open then run
now power up the external hard drive and plug it in
a sign will come up as new plug in found , checking for drivers
next sign will say hard drive ready to use
Go to your External drive manufacturer page and download the driver for it.
All i would recommend you to update all your PC drivers.
For that you can use this utility

Hope my solution would solve your problem.
Have a Nice day
External hard drives are plug and play, the drivers are build into windows.
IF the hard drive was connected when your computed crashed, and the hard drive was in use, it may have damaged it.
If it does not automatically connect to other PC's looks like it has been damaged
With the computer off, plug the unit in to the computer and turn it on.
Now start the computer, there is no driver to install manually, windows uses generic drivers to detect plug n play devise's.
Out of hundreds of computers, the only time I have not seen a hard drive detected was because the hard drive was bad, and the others where hacked versions of windows, called lite xp, or the chipset drivers where not loaded because someone just installed windows but nothing else.
You can look through your bios for plug n play, but its probably set to auto.
Most external HD's take a while to be detected from 10 seconds up to a few minutes.
If the driver does not install automatically, what driver are you installing that you get it to work ??????????????????????????
