you should see a picture of an envelope in the paper tray area. remove any other paper and align the paper guides to the envelope. If you are using WORD make sure to change the paper type to the correct envelope size.
Paper jams can occur in the following areas
1 Top cover and toner cartridge area
2 Optional envelope feeder
3 Input tray areas
4 Optional duplexer
5 Output areas (top and rear)
6 Fuser area
Solving repeated paper jams
* Check all the paper jam locations. A piece of paper might be stuck somewhere in the printer. Even a small torn piece of paper in the printer path can cause repeated jams.
* If using a duplexer, check all areas (including under the duplexer).
* Check that paper is correctly loaded in the trays, that all three adjustments have been made, and that the trays are not overfilled. Make sure paper is under the front and back tabs.
* Check that all trays and paper handling accessories are completely inserted into the printer. (If a tray is opened during a print job, this might cause a paper jam.)
* Check that all covers and doors are closed. (If a cover or door is opened during a print job, this might cause a paper jam.)
* Try printing to a different output bin.
* The sheets might be sticking together. Try bending the stack to separate each sheet. Do not fan the stack.
* If you are printing from tray 1, try reducing the size of the stack.
* If printing from the envelope feeder, make sure it is loaded correctly, pushing the bottom envelopes in slightly farther than the top envelopes.
* If you are printing small sizes, feed paper short edge first.
* Turn over the stack of paper in the tray. Also try rotating the paper 180°.
* Check the characteristics of the media you are using. Use only paper that meets HP specifications (see the online user guide for paper specifications). Try using different paper to see if the problem goes away. Do not use curled, deformed, damaged, or
irregular paper.
* Avoid using paper that has already been used in a printer or copier.
* Do not print on both sides of envelopes or transparencies.
* Print only on full sheets of labels and do not print on both sides of label sheets.
* Check that the power supplied to the printer is steady and meets printer specifications (see the online user guide for printer specifications).
* Clean the printer (see the online user guide procedures).
Hope this helps.

Open the Rear Tray and pull out the Paper Support. Put your finger in the rounded indent of the Paper Support and pull it out until it stops. (See <1> in Figure 1 below.)
Open the Paper Output Tray. Put your finger in the rounded indent beside the Paper Output Tray and open it gently. (See <2> in Figure 1 below.)
Open the Output Tray Extension. Open up and set the Output Tray Extension completely by pressing down the hollow on its front side. (See <3> in Figure 1 below.)
Adjust the position of the Paper Thickness Lever. Set it to the right when printing on envelopes or T-shirt transfers, and left when printing on any other type of paper. (See <4> in Figure 1 below.)
Press down firmly on the edges of the envelopes to make the folds crisp. Also, press firmly on the area that corresponds to the edges of the back flap.
Remove any curling by holding the edges diagonally and bending them gently.
If the edges of the envelope are inflated or are curling, place the envelope on a flat surface. With a pen, press down while moving it from the center toward the edges of the envelope.
Ensure that no curl or puff exceeds 1/8 in. (3 mm).

try to do a full clean up on your printer there should be a printer service on your printer. also try to do a dust blower you might have to take apart your printer to make sure everything works fine.
when you print envelopes you will have to select the paper size in the print options. There should be a pull down menu with every paper size and envelope size. Select the appropriate one, and be sure the envelopes are placed the right way when you feed them in. Most home printers work best when you manually feed the envelopes in. Its a tricky process, and you may have a few jams.
I have an older, but similar, 5510 model with the same problem. A partial solution that works about 75% of the time is to tuck the envelope flap inside the envelope and give the end of the envelope that is to feed into the machine a slight curve by gentlly bending it on both sides. Then make sure there are only a few sheets of paper in the paper tray (less than 1/8" thick stack). Position the envelope so it is only about 1/2" from the end of the paper in the tray so the feed rollers have to transport it into the machine. I also have to set the margin for the return address in Word to be 1" from the edge of the paper so it prints in proper position, but this may be a problem with my Word 2000.
Are there settings on the control panel of your printer? Is the tray 1 the MP tray? (The one that flips towards you) If so, can you change the settings of the Tray 1 to Envelope on the control panel?
On my MP780, be careful to select the appropriate paper type; I was getting black smudges on the left side of my envelopes until I explicitly set that my paper type was "envelope" from "plain paper".
Another idea is to adjust the "ink drying wait time" to a higher level.
