PS3 has a dual laser, you can have one fail and the other fail. Also, the media can be damaged or slightly out of spec (red book, manufacturing quality) where the weakened laser can't see the data anymore (think bad glasses, old scrip or scratched up).

SOURCE: PS3 laser Problem

It sounds like you bought a defective laser or it is the chip on your "sister board". There is a chip on the circuit board thats on the bottom of the Blu-Ray drive and it has a silver rectangle on it. Some say that that chip is going bad on some machines. I have repaird 60+ PS3's this year and I haven't had this happen to me yet though. I would suggest trying another laser, then if that doesn't work try a "sister board" from the same model of PS3. I'm still not possitive if that is a possible solution though. The "sister board" is supposedly keyed to only work with the mother board it came with. Well, I hope this helps. Good luck!!

SOURCE: PS3 won't recognize disks after update

You can back up ANYTHING you wish to keep via the backup utility what I'm about to tell you to do will essentially erase your harddrive. After backing up any data you wish to keep, restore your PS3 system and to a FULL ( not quick ) format of your harddrive ( this will probably take a couple of hours ). After that, if it still doesn't work call SONY.

Hope that helps..........

SOURCE: Ps3 not playing blu ray on my samsung LCD

Change the frame rate on your tv to 60hd, that should solve it. Basically, your tv might be set to theater mode which is playing 24hd..

SOURCE: my ps3 wont load any games

Check all of your settings and make sure everything is configured properly. If you made any changes to you system configuration just before this issue happened just change back to previous config and see what happens.
If everything is correct, then, unfortunately cleaning the lens is not going to help very much. This is similar to the "disc read error" on the boxy ps2. The best thing for you to do is to call sony and tell them that your blu-ray player is not working you can only read regular dvds. It has happened to a few people that I know and they were still under warranty and it was replaced. If this happens to be a common issue then maybe Sony will still replace it outside of warranty. Never know, but it is always worth a shot.

Ps3 slim blue ray won't play can't find settings

Will it play anything? The laser eye may need to be cleaned. Sometimes the drive will play DVDs but not games, or games and bluray movies, but not DVDs .... in that situation, the bluray laser may need to be replaced

Won't play a blue ray disc

The blueray eye is out. You will need a new blueray player. The only problem with that is the ps3 will only respond with the orginal parts it came with. ( i.e. motherboard blueray player ) So the best bet is to buy a broken blueray player and take the eye out and replace it with yours just the eye not the whole thing.

How come my ps3 wont register my games but it will dvds

You may have a system that has a 'dual eye' laser installed into it. This means, one eye controls the CD/DVD and the other eye Blu Ray/Game. Your dvd's and cd's will probably play just fine but no games or blu rays.

This is the 2nd most common problem with PS3's. This isn't a bad problem. Your laser/lens will need to be replaced. There are many videos on youtube if you would like to do it yourself (I would advise you not to). I recommend that you find a technician who has experience. There are many things that can go wrong.

My consoles cannot run the game disc

Most likely you need a new eye.My ps3 wasn't reading neither. At first it was reading everything but blu-ray.Then it wasn't reading anything.Little circle in corner be spinning and everything.I cleaned my eye I used cd cleaner didn't work.My system is out of warranty so had to get it fixed on own.So i opened it got a q-tip wiped it off with alcohol switched ends. With dry tip and dried the eye off. That will help you if your ps3 reads everything but blu-ray.But all it was really doing is telling me my eye was dying.Suddenly it read nothing so I invested in a new eye.Put it in myself now she's running like a champ.Hope this help but if your system still play dvd movies and ps2 games.Your blu-ray is acting up go by my steps first. Before destroying your ps3 or buying another might be a 50 dollar problem.Compared to sony 160 to send you another used 1.

I got the 250g PS3 for my son for Christmas. Works great with Games, DVDs, etc. But, it will not play a Blue-Ray Disc. It keeps going back to (no source) after I insert it everytime! I am running an HDMI...

Well the most typical problem for something like this is that the Blu-ray software is either disabled on the Playstation console OR you need to update your Blu-ray software by allowing the Playstation to connect to an internet source

This will show you some general set-up settings to use :

This link literally in the first 30 seconds shows you how to allow your PS3 system to update the blu-ray player itself :

Wont play ps3 games

your exactly right, it is a blu ray problem. Your best bet is to get a laser lens cleaning CD and run that through the system 2 or 3 times. If this doesn't work then it means that either the blu ray laser itself has died (in the case of dual lasers) or is just so jammed with dust that a lens cleaner isn't enough. At this point your going to want to call PlayStation and talk to them about getting it repaired.

PS3 Laser DVD/Blu-ray

the blue ray laser has two high energy beams at 450nm(bluelight) and 730nm (redlight). the highpower diode on your machine im afraid has failed. you need to install a new laser ..only 100 i charge or 160 from sony (150+TAX 2 week wait)
Now if you have the newer model laser KES410ACA, then you have 2 SEPARATE light sources...these tend not to fail as often
