My hp pavilion slimline won't turn on after put new power supply in

why new PSU,? if PC dead before say so we fix that. ask.
slimlines use a custom HP PSU, not standard ATX.
the PSU on these also have HP custom fan controls from PC mobo
to the PSU, and will fail using any generic ATX psu.
IT NEEDS TO BE HP ONLY PSU, correct HP P/N#
NO PSU LABEL POSTED BY YOU
NOR THE SOURCE, NOR IF A USED PSU.
and both DC power wires, 24 and 4 pin must be connected or the CPU will be dead. 2 key power cords one goes near CPU,see?
some PSU have 120./240ac switch on the rear, and must not ever be set wrong, and is frankly step #1 OOBE. it..

I have a gateway atx 300 12 e psu i belive is dead,can I use a newer psu with 24 pins?

Yes, in almost all cases, a 24 pin PSU can still work on a 20 pin board, the 24 pin connector usually splits at the 20 pin point and will then fit the board socket. Just make sure whatever PSU you buy can do this and you'll be fine. The more important thing is to make sure all the other connectors are the correct style for your board.

I can't get my Compaq PC to power up, the PSU fan turns momentarily then stops. I suspected the power supply because if I connect the PS_ON pin to 3V Aux I get the same thing happening. I then tried...

no PC model stated, at all... wow, 1984 to 2014 compaqs.
wow.
the PSU is bad if the jumper wire test fails
easy as eating apple pie, do that test. the voltages in the PC case are safe, 12vdc max. (no do not short out power rails.

NO the ATX spec is published in the wiki
the first compaq are 20 pin then later 24
so ill do 24 , just wild guessing what PC model you have.
why must we beg model PCs'
its like saying a Have a FORD car, what ford what engine, see?

jump 16 to 17 (17 is ground)
do not hot wire power OK (good) pin 8,
do not or blow up a good PSU.
never hot wire anything you do not understand
in this case the pin 16 has pull up resistor 5k, in all PSU made on earth. and you ground it (0v logic) to tune power on.
see the schematic in this page, do not blow up IC2.
or you will be sorry, I promise.

this works on all PSU made ATX spec. per wiki.

Hi davids38,

I really recommend getting a 24-pin adapter Power Supply Unit (PSU). I had this problem once and did purchase a 24-pin adapter for my 20-pin PSU but my computer wasn't stable (random reboots and lock up). I purchased a 24-pin PSU and my computer worked fine ever since. Hope this helps.

Thanks
