All this does by calling it Program instead of Auto is that it remembers your favorite settings (if you choose to make any) rather than resetting them each time you turn on or off the camera. For example, if you turn off the flash, or you turn off digital zoom and change the ISO from auto in the menus, they are saved for the next time you turn on the camera.
This guy gives a pretty good overview of the camera on youtube. http://youtu.be/8dxvW-Csyhg
He says he doesn't know what the metering function does, that helps determine if you want the shutter and exposure based on what's in the center of the camera (if you're taking someone's portrait) or by evaluating the entire view field (if you were taking landscape scenery pictures).
Of course this could be many things, but it sounds like your auto clutter < labeled by Furuno as AC Sea Auto, is on and out of adjustment. Try turning off auto sea clutter and manually declutter the screen, should help, otherwise, 847-746-0100 will definately help you.

Find a way to hang the unit, keeping it level. I use 4 coat hangers, cut off and bent to a hook at the bottom. Put a safety string , wire or clip on one of them in case it gets bumped. Using your hand, turn the turntable and let it go through it's cycle. You will be able to see where and when thinks happen. Some have notches and some are friction fit. As long as you don't force anything, you should be able to realign the timing of the gears.
You probably Have The R. margin set to close and you a re in auto return mode. Tab allthe way to the right, press R. mar. key. Press code and R to turn off the auto return.
IF you are saying that it returns and spaces up by itself You probably have the R. margin set at that point and Auto return on. To turn off auto return CODE "R" will shut it off.
