SOURCE: How to remove printhead from canon i860
The gray-colored arm (it's not that small) is to the right of the cyan cartridge. It is the arm or extension of the gray-colored hinged cover. Remove all ink cartridges, lift the gray-colored arm up, and pull the print head out. Clean the print head with a cotton ball soaked with water or rubbing alcohol. Dry and re-install the print head.

close cover, turn off
turn on, let power up, error message should be gone.
open cover, reinstall cartridges
if you cleaned your print head like I did you'll probly
eventually end up getting a new one anyway, due to the color variations
but I can at least print text.
SOURCE: how do I clean the heads on my Canon i450 printer
# Hold the
cartridge upside down, with the bar-code label facing you and take a damp paper
towel.
# Use the towel to wipe the printhead of the
cartridge on the bottom (where the ink comes out). Wipe the printhead
horizontally in one direction only (left to right).
# Continue doing this until it looks clean.
# Then dab the cartridge on the towel to make sure
the ink is flowing.
# Next, look inside the printer and locate the
carrier that holds ink cartridges. Caution: Make sure the cartridges are not
installed at this point.
1. Look for a shiny piece of metal underneath the
contacts at the back of the carrier.
2. Take a damp cotton swab (use water only!) and
wipe along the bottom of the shiny metal piece. Note: You may need more than
one swab.
# Reinstall the cartridges, making sure you snap
them correctly into the printer.

SOURCE: How do I remove the print head from my Canon MP810
I just replaced my MP810 printer head. Procedure: open printer - remove ink cartridges - Pick up arm located on right side of cartridge holder- remove printer head by picking up by the cartridge slots. Place new printer head in holder - replace printer cartridges - press arm down and your done....However, the error message stays on and reset procedure doesn't remove it. Canon tech support said their solution (because of distance from canon support) is to replace MP810 with comparable printer, which came to $299 with 15% discount and free shipping. My solution, I’m checking out other printers.
