Clientpro 414 won't read a dvd with an iso file.

I'm trying to install Linux and need to boot from a DVD

Judging by this review, your computer possesses a CD drive and NOT a DVD drive.

Your best luck at installing Linux (Good choice for an old computer by the way) would be to use a USB Drive for the installation.

You should find the instructions for creating a USB Drive and for booting from live USB on the website of the Linux distribution you're trying to install.

The battery is fairly easy to replace on a CP414, but you need to be careful to avoid breaking the battery socket.

You will need a small Philips-head screw driver (#1, I think) and a small flat-blade screwdriver (for prying). A pair of tweezers will help too.

1. On the back of the system, remove the cable door. It is held in by 1 screw and wraps around the back/bottom of the system.
2. The battery is half-way under the optical drive. The only way to easily remove it is to remove the optical drive.
3. Remove the optical drive. It is held in by 1 screw near the bottom of the system (not the screw in the bottom-right corner of the back of the system, but the one just above that). With the screw removed you can push on the back of the optical drive by reaching in through the cable door you removed in step 1.
4. The battery has a sticker on it that protects it from shorting against the optical drive. This sticker is important, so save it if you can. If you can't save it, use some electrical tape or similar to prevent a short.
5. Peel back the end of the sticker that is closest to the optical drive frame and gently pry back the metal clip that holds the CMOS battery down. It should pop out fairly easily.

When you re-insert a new CMOS battery, make sure you insert the end under the metal clip first and then push down. Also, make sure it is properly aligned or you will probably break the battery socket.

Replacing the battery is much easier if the motherboard is removed first, but removing the motherboard adds about an hour to the whole process. If you want to go down that route, let me know and I'll give you some help.

Windows 8 is 'old hat' now and you may have difficulty in upgrading, if it is actually still possible.

Your computer is old? There's (old) 32 bit computers and more modern 64 bit computers. An operating system is designed for either 32 bit or 64 bit.

What you can try is another OS such as Linux. Run it as a 'live version' to see if you like it before you install/use it. All you need is a usb drive or dvd that can be written to.
1. Download rufus

2. Download a Linux iso image - such as Desktop Ubuntu (it will download into the downloads folder)

3. Insert the USB drive into your computer

4.Open rufus - navigate to the download folder and install Ubuntu onto the USB drive. (simply copying and pasting the files will NOT work. You have to make a bootable USB. Rufus does this for you.

You now have a portable OS on a USB.

5. Restart your PC and open the bios settings. Navigate to the boot sequence and change the first boot device to USB. Press F10 and exit. Your PC will then restart and run Linux from the USB. No changes are made to your computer.

You can either run Linux 'live' from USB or click on the desktop icon which says install onto computer.

If you wish - instead of putting Linux Ubuntu onto USB you can burn the downloaded .iso file onto dvd and choose cd/dvd drive as first boot device.

Again, simply copying and pasting the Linux image onto dvd will not work. You must make it bootable. I you don't have the software try installing k3b:

Can I override the bios at startup so that it will recognize a new hard drive - for linux?

There should be no need to play around with your bios settings. Linux will install on a brand new hard drive as the sole operating system, or on an existing hard drive alongside Windows without any problem.

If you haven't already got a Linux distro, have a look at

Download whichever version of Ubuntu you prefer (LTS- the long term support version is recommended).

When the .iso file containing the operating system had downloaded, burn it onto a dvd, or install it on a usb drive.

Insert the dvd into the drive and restart or switch off/switch on the computer. The dvd will then kick in and offer you the choice of trying Ubuntu without installing, or a full install.

If you're using a new, empty hard drive just follow the on screen instructions and Ubuntu will install as the sole operating system.

If you already have Windows on your hard drive Ubuntu will give you the choice of either erasing Windows or installing Ubuntu alongside Windows. It's your choice.

Installing Ubuntu alongside Windows creates a dual boot hard drive. At start up you just choose which OS to use - Windows or Ubuntu. If creating this dual-boot system Ubuntu puts a (Linux) boot loader into the Windows OS so that Linux is recognised.

If you save the Ubuntu file to a usb drive you then have to change the bios settings so that your computer uses USB as the first boot device. Then restart your computer so that it boots in from your usb .. and Ubuntu will begin installing.

Whichever you use - dvd or usb - during the installation process Ubuntu will ask you how many GB of hard drive space it should use? You do not need to physically partition the hard drive. Linux will do it for you.

If it's a desktop PC you are using with Windows on the first hard drive and are fitting a second hard drive to install Linux on, or have installed Linux on the second hard drive .. and find that Linux doesn't appear at start up, it's because there's no Linux boot loader in Windows.

I quit using Windows many years ago.

Toshiba satellite M45-S169 won't boot ubuntu from DVD

Your really pushing the lower minimum requirement limits if you're trying to use Ubuntu 11 or Ubuntu 12. Especially with your on-board graphics chip which borrows system ram.

Try Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS (Lucid Lynx) instead.

Have you tried a Live CD?

Since you have a newer model, you can try the latest Ubuntu release located here.

Download the .iso file.

Burn the .iso file to a CD or DVD.

For burning .iso files to media, I like ImgBurn for Windows ( http://www.softpedia.com/dyn-postdownload.php?p=27810&t=4&i=1 ) and plain K3B for Linux.

Once the disk is burned, pop it in and make your machine boot from the Optical Drive (CD/DVD Drive).

Hit enter a few times once you are asked about the preferred language and to try Ubuntu without changes to your computer.

From there it should either boot up okay (maybe without sound because sound is iffy in Linux) or it will continue to be all kinds of badness.

The thing is at this point you should be able to tell if it is most likely hardware or software. If Linux boots up off of your disk, your Windows installation is hosed (not so bad, possibly cheap to fix). If you can't even boot into a Linux live environment, then the fix may involve money and a fair amount of screwdriver action.

If you have the 'ubunto.iso' file, you need CD/DVD-writing software to read that ISO file, and to burn that image onto a blank writable disk.

Then, restart your computer, and change the "boot-order" so that the CD/DVD device is the _FIRST_ boot-device. Then, Ubuntu will boot-up, and you can "install" Ubuntu onto your disk-drive.

DVD/CD only runs cds it will not recognize DVDS

Are you trying to watch a DVD movie? If so, you need a third party DVD software installed like WinDVD,PowerDVD or any other DVD player software. I would recommend VLC media player. It supports most all formats.

Install Linux OS

I would recommend installing Linux Mint LXDE, Cinnamon or KDE, which is a free OS available for free download from http://linuxmint.com Cinnamon and KDE are full featured, XFCE is streamlined and slightly faster and a better choice for older computers with less memory and/or storage space. All versions come with Firefox and LibreOffice full Office Suite, capable of saving and reading files in the popular MS Office formats like .doc, .docX, .ppt and xls.

Linux comes with almost everything necessary to begin using the computer immediately after installing the OS.

To install it on a netbook or notebook computer, I'm assuming you don't have a DVD optical drive so you have to install it from a USB thumb drive. If you have a DVD optical drive, I would still recommend installing it from the USB thumb drive, ... it's more reliable and less prone to failures from trying to burn a DVD on old, dirty or out-of tolerance equipment.

First download the .iso file on another computer. If you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit, you can use the 32-bit for both, or try the 64-bit - if that doesn't work, use the 32-bit.

Use a free program to create a bootable USB using the .iso file. (You can't just copy the file to the USB drive) ... I'd recommend using Active ISO Burner from NTFS.com ... here's the download link ... http://www.ntfs.com/iso-burning.htm (You should be using at least an 8 GB size thumb drive).

Once you've created the bootable USB drive from the .iso file, you should be able to insert it and start the computer and see the Linux Mint startup screen. It will come up in LIVE mode, without installing itself, so you can try it out.

If you want to install it, make sure you are connected to the Internet and have your AC power adapter plugged in.

If the computer doesn't come up with the Linux screen, you probably just need to reset your BIOS boot order so it boots from the USB driver first. Plug in the USB drive and start the computer. Look of instructions for set up or boot order, usually pressing F2 while the computer is starting. Follow the directions to move the USB to the top of the boot devices, i.e. about the hard drive. Save changes and restart the computer. It should now boot from the USB. If you have trouble doing this or burning the bootable USB, you might have a geek friend or relative that can help or do it for you.

When the LIVE mode comes up, it displays the Linux desktop with an Install icon. If you double click the Install Icon you will begin the installation process and just follow the simple prompts and create a password when prompted.

Linux never requires anti-virus and does not become infected. You can visit the main http://linuxmint.com website and download the .PDF manual if you are interested.

Your computer is probably 64-bit, but if not, there is also a 32-bit version available for download.

The image shown below is from my Acer and is Linux Mint KDE, which is also available from the same website and similar to LXDE, but more full-featured. All Google programs I know of are available for Linux, since Google uses 100% Linux. Android is Linux also.

Once you install your Linux, you'll want to run the Update Manager to get the latest updates.

On my Acer netbook I have 3 Linux OS's installed. Linux Mint Cinnamon 64-bit, Linux Mint KDE Cinnamon 64-bit and Linux Mint XFCE 64-bit. I select the OS I want at startup when the computer starts.

Dual Boot Ubuntu

1st, install windows or if you have already its good .

Then, download Linux distribution that suits You better
Download It and burn into a CD or DVD with ISO file you can use Magic ISO or other manufacturer

then Go to BIOS setup and set 1st priority is the CD or DVD drive and save and exit

and install follow the instruction of linux.

also if you chose capacity of windows or linux is to little dont worry you can make install a partition magic and resize what you like....

Windows vista

How To Make Vista Bootable DVD with WIM Downloaded Files If you have purchased Windows Vista online and taken the delivery of the latest operating system via web download from Windows Marketplace, you would ends up with a few downloads with .wim and .exe file extensions. Rather than paying additional shipping and handling charges, you can burn or create a bootable ISO DVD image from downloaded Vista files with the following trick, where the .iso image can subsequently write to a DVD. The DVD created will be the typical 32-bit Windows Vista DVD that available in retail channel, and can be used to clean install.

How to make a bootable Windows Vista ISO DVD media

1. Put all 3 downloaded files (namely install.wim, boot.wim and an executable X13-49120.exe) in the same folder (for this tutorial, let’s assume the files are put on C:\ else you need to modify the path accordingly).
2. Run the X13-49120.exe executable. Windows Vista Setup Preparation will create a new folder “Vista” inside the folder and will populate the folder with all necessary Vista setup files which takes up about 2.52 GB disk space.
3. Exit from the Install Windows screen.
4. Download CDimage 2.52
5. Extract CDimage from CDimage.zip to the C:\ root directory.
6. Open a command prompt shell, and run the following command:

cdimage.exe -lVISTA_EN_DVD -m -u2 -bC:\Vista\boot\etfsboot.com C:\Vista\ C:\Vistax86.iso

Bootable Windows Vista x86 DVD ISO image in UDF format will be created as vistax86.iso in C:\ or any folder you specified above.
7. Burn the newly create ISO with a CD/DVD burning software such as Nero or Alcohol 120%. Try to burn at low speed (i.e. 4X) and turn on verification to ensure that the DVD creation is fine.

Create a Windows Vista ISO image and DVD with Oscdimg

Another possible way to create a bootable Vista ISO and DVD is by using Oscdimg CD-ROM and DVD-ROM Premastering Utility, available via WinPE (Windows Preinstallation Environment) via Business Desktop Deployment 2007 or Windows Automated Installation Kit (AIK)

1. Complete step 1 - 3 as above.
2. In the command prompt window, run the following command:

oscdimg -bC:\Vista\boot\etfsboot.com -h -u2 -m -lVISTA_EN_DVD C:\Vista\ C:\VistaDVD.iso

A VistaDVD.iso UDF DVD image will be created and can be used to boot the computer from DVD to install Vista.
3. Burn the ISO image file by using last step above.
