What is the purpose of the microphone in the dirt duct tube

Hello! The umbrella tube is a stationary part, it does not rotate. The dirt that enters in the dirt cup spins around the umbrella tube. If no dirt is entering into the dirt cup this can mean there is a blockage either in your hoses and/or your filters. Try these quick trouble shooting steps below.

1. Remove the dirt cup canister from the vacuum. Twist off the dirt cup lid.
2. Remove the primary foam filter. Hold filter under running water until water runs clear. Allow 24 hours to air dry. If the filter is really dirty it may need to be replaced.
3. Slide the Hepa filter out. Tap the filter against the trash can until dirt stops falling. Replace the Hepa filter. (Do not wash)
4. Remove the hose from both ends. Use a broom stick to gently loosen and clear any clogs from hose.
5. Use a wooden spoon or something similar to loosen and remove any clogs from the lower hose. Hope this helps!

There's a microphone inside the tube the dirt runs up. It listens for dirt coming up the tube. They just go bad and there's no making it better. You can either replace that entire assembly or ignore it. Fairly easy to replace. I'll include the part so you know what you're looking at.

Usually this can be cured by removing the duct at the rear of the vacuum, that the hose attaches to, and using a small screwdriver to push around the outer edges of the small round microphone button. It may not look as if anything is happening, but this will usually cure the problem. I like to put a small piece of sponge or rubber against the mike to hold it more firmly in place prior to re-assembly.

The purpose of the filter is to prevent dirt from getting to the motor. The dirt is supposed to go into the canister.

A few weeks ago I ran into the same problem, virtually no suction. First I replaced the bad belt (make sure you fit it right or it'll destroy the belt, luckily I bought 2!) and while the vacuum sounded more "alive" it didn't seem to pick up anything any better. The final solution was taking apart the entire intake port section down to the motor and getting the collection tube. It was filled with junk all the way up. I spent over an hour clearing out gunk and animal fur throughout the tubing. Putting it back together was a cinche because the entire vacuum uses one screw type universally. The whole process was pretty intuitive and its clear it's meant to be taken apart for just this purpose.

I have had the same problem for six months and finally found the solution.

The problem is that the air duct into the dirty water tank was blocked. The air flows up the black removeable hose, into the dirty water tank and out through the filter. With the air duct into the dirty water tank blocked, no dirt gets anywhere near the filter.

The black removeable hose is the hose in the base of Scooba that the instructions tell the user to clean after each use. Despite cleaning this hose after each use, plenty of cat hair and other dirt passed by the hose and got lodged above it on the tank side of the incoming air duct.

The air duct into the dirty water tank is formed out of the blue plastic the tank is made from. You can find it by looking to see where the black removeable hose lines up with the tank when it is placed on Scooba. It is the same diameter is a the removeable black hose so you can't miss it.

Getting the gunk out is tricky because there is a bend in the duct. I fished most of it out with my fingers and then poked a bendable plastic spoon handle to get further down the duct. I then flushed water down it and shook the tank to get more out. After cleaning, water dripped into the air vent would come out the dirty water tank drain hole with little resistance.

After cleaning the air intake duct I ran my Scooba and got dirt in the filter for the first time in months.

I had the same problem with a hoover windtunnel 6200 - u5477-900. I removed the flexible hose from top of the plastic tube running vertically along the right side of the back of the vacuum. When I used a flashlight to look into the plastic tube, I could see a clog at the bottom, where the flexible hose curved frontwards towards the brushes. I then removed the 2 screws holding the vertical plastic tube to the vacuum. When I disconnected the plastic tube from the flexible hose at the bottom, I found a clog of dirt and dog hair. After removing the clog and reassembling, the clean / dirty light now moves back and forth from red to green.

On the back, take the hose off, inside the duct you can see a disc,(it is on the bottom of the duct) it may be filmed over with dirt, that is the sensor, clean it off then try again. If it still comes on, then it may be bad or you have a clog in the hose or the dirt inlet by the brush roll.
