Question about Canon PIXMA MP780 All-In-One InkJet Printer

2 Answers

In Use Memory is flashing and there is a clicking sound.

My 780 was working fine prior to my move. I installed it into the new apt but now the in use memory light is flashing and there is a clicking sound that it continuous.
I checked for any left over documents in copy, fax, and scan and none are there. Also no documents are in control panel.
The clicking does not correspond to the memory light. Also it is a double click: click, click...click, click..about every second. This is driving me crazy!
Finally it won't let me turn it off saying: "machine in use, can not turn off"
Otherwise it works fine.
I would hate to discard it just for the clicking and the light but it really is that annoying, can someone help me?

Thanks so much for your help. I must admit that after several weeks of crazy making clicking I just went ahead and bought a Pixma MX700. I guess I was looking for an excuse. Your suggestions however let me know that I can pass this printer on without guilt. Thanks--ACI

I plugged in the telephone line, and the clicking stopped.  But "In use, memory" is still flashing.  If I try to power off, I get "machine in use, cannot turn off."  This all started with a power failure, that also put some other gear into a weird mode.

I had the same problem with my Canon Pixma MR780, the clicking, the flashing memory light, the inability to power off using the button. I followed your recommendation and your solution cured the problem. THANK YOU!

Okay, this is what happens when you put your USB cable into the external device jack next to the telephone line jack (instead of the USB port). Once you plug the stuff in correctly, the problem goes away.

Issue: Clicking noise is heard or In Use/Memory light is on steady or flashing.

solution 1.

  1. After all jobs have completed and you are certain there are no more pending jobs, disconnect the interface (parallel or USB) cable from the device.

  2. If the model is fax capable, disconnect the telephone line cord from the device.

  3. Disconnect the power cord (also referred to as adapter) from the device.

  4. Shut down the computer.

  5. Wait for approximately ten seconds and then reconnect the power cord.

  6. Once the device has powered back on, press <ON/OFF> to confirm the device will power off.

  7. If the device powers off, press <ON/OFF> to power the device back on.

  8. Reconnect the interface cable (and telephone line cord - if applicable) to the device.

  9. Turn on the computer.

Solution 2:

Connect the telephone line cord to the correct port on the device

Connect the telephone line cord to the appropriate port on the device. The telephone line cord must be connected correctly for the device to function properly.
  1. Connect a line cord from the telephone wall jack to the [L] jack on the device. The [L] jack is indicated in the magnified view by the red arrow.

  2. Connect a line cord from the extension telephone port on the device* to an external telephone, answering machine or computer modem. The extension telephone port is indicated in the maginified view by the blue arrow.

Hi,
Looks like Memory Issue,
Memory modules are detected, but a memory power failure has occurred.
You can try as follows :
  • If two or more memory modules are installed, remove the modules, then reinstall one module and restart the computer. If the computer starts normally, continue to install additional memory modules (one at a time) until you have identified a faulty module or reinstalled all modules without error. If only one memory module is installed, try moving it to a different DIMM connector and restart the computer.
  • If available, install verified working memory of the same type into your computer.
Let me know
Thanks

I downloaded VLC for ubuntu but i couldn't install it

The reason for that could be because some of the dependencies have not been met.
You can try these methods:
First the easy one: Click on the link below:
http://ubuntu-tweak.com
Then click on the download now button. Actually this will download and install the ubuntu tweak program.
Once you have this installed, go to System tools and then to Ubuntu tweak from there.
Once ubuntu tweak opens, click on the application center. On the right hand side you will see a list of programs. Check whether VLC player is on the list. If yes. select it and click apply. Most chances are that it will install the VLC.
Else: Move on to the the Terminal.
Open a terminal.
Copy and paste the commands below:
sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/jaunty.list --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list
---------------------------------------------------------
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get update
---------------------------------------------------------
sudo apt-get update
---------------------------------------------------------
sudo apt-get install non-free-codecs
-----------------------------------------------------------
sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2 libxine1-ffmpeg gxine mencoder
---------------------------------------------------------
sudo apt-get install vlc mplayer

------------------------------------------------------------
I have drawn some lines to separate the individual commands. Especially the first one is long and may confuse, where one command starts and end.
Hope this helps. Don't give up on ubuntu. If you are beginner, it may look difficult for a week or so. Then you will find it is way better than windows. Try Xine media player also. And K3b for burning disk.

In Use Memory is flashing and there is a clicking sound.

Yeah, I had the same problem and I had to pay $9.99 for the solution. :P I called Canon’s technical support for help even though I have an expired warrantee, so that’s why this little piece of information was so expensive. Oh well, at least I didn’t cry and I’m happy that it’s fixed. lol
So this is the problem, just like everyone keeps saying: THE USB CORD IS IN THE PHONE JACK AND THE FAX THINKS THAT THE PRINTER IS “ON HOOK.” The thing is, in the back of the printer you have a column of jacks, the one on top has an icon of a phone and the one on bottom has a picture of an “L” or laptop. TAKE YOUR USB CORD OUT OF EITHER ONE OF THOSE, NO MATTER WHICH ONE IT MAY BE. What you may not have figured out by now is that there is a THIRD jack that is not anywhere near those two. If you’re facing the front of the printer to the far right of the backside of the machine, there is this deep cavity that has your third, miracle jack in it. It’s even more to the right than the two jacks I described previously and its icon looks like a sideways, three-pronged cactus. Plug the square end of the USB cord into that jack, and the In Use/Memory light should stop blinking, and your printer can stop acting like car because the annoying, turn-signal clicking should stop as well. :)
You’re problem was probably the same as mine, when you moved your printer, you neglected to find your instructions manual (because you probably neglected to put that in a safe placed too lol) and you forgot which jack the USB cord went into.
Well, I hope my help was clear and that my $9.99 can go towards helping all those with this same problem and get use out of what seems like a waste of money. lol
