How old? is it HD? - Sharp LC-32SB21U 32 in. LCD TV

If it is an hd compatible tv the is has to have either an hdmi port or a dvi port. Our old projection tv was hd but before the current hdmi format so we had to use an hdmi to dvi conversion cable. If it doesn't have either of these then it probably isn't hd compatible.

This sounds to me to be one of two things. Either your HD is not connected to the motherboard or your HD has crashed.

Step one is to open your tower and make sure the HD is connected to the motherboard.
Step two (if step one has been resolved) Replace the HD this will require you to reload your Operating System.(XP,Visat,Windows 7)
Step three once the New HD has been replaces and the Operating System loaded you can make the old HD a slave drive (second on the daisy chain) and copy the data from the old to the new HD.

The easiest route would be to install the new hard drive in place of the old hard drive and place the old hard drive below the new hard drive and make it a secondary hard drive or slave drive. Once you have them installed this way you can install Windows XP Home to the new hard drive once you have it installed to the hard drive then you can copy everything from your old hard drive to the new one. Once you have everything copied from the old hard drive you can then format it within Windows to have 33GBs of space to store anything you wish. Your old hard drive contained files used by the OS, as well as the OS itself. If you replaced that HD with another, and did not clone your existing install onto the new HD, then there is no boot record, nor is there anything to boot. It is not possible to just swap a HD and expect it to work without either cloning the old drive or performing a fresh install of an OS. The fact that it is detected by the BIOS is good, as you can install a new OS onto the new drive, or use a program like Ghost to clone your old drive's contents onto the new drive.

I have spent hours trying to figure out how this damn thing works since the instructions require the user to have way more computing skill than I. First, the thing comes apart, one part being the interface and additional power supply and the other being the power supply that may connect to the Coolmax or your HD power supply if not operational through the Coolmax. If your old HD is larger than 3.5", you may have to connect the power plug to the HD 4 pin power source. otherwise, connect old HD to the Coolmax CD 350 adapter and then connect the Support USB2.0 to a USB interface on your new computer. If your old HD is a 2.5 SATA , do not connect the red power plug to a USB2 interface on your new computer unless you are positive the old HD operates over 5V. Connecting the red USB power source to your new computers USB2 interface may cause the old HD to shoot sparks and smoke, and you will not need the device any more.

The easiest way to upgrade from your old HD to the new 40Gb HD is to clone the old to the new. Do a google for "hard disk clone" freewares. Personally I use Partition Magic and have had very good results.

Hardware wise, you need to install the 40Gb as a slave to the old HD by connecting the same IDE cable as that of the old HD (you may have to remove your CD/DVD temporarily). You also have to temporarily remove the single jumper of the 40Gb to allocate it as a slave to the primary master (old HD). Plug in likewise the 4 wire power connector. On power up go to your CMOS/BIOS setup to verify that your PC autodetect the 40GB (you may have to do a manual detection). Boot your PC and go through the normal boot sequence. Thereafter download your clone software choice, install and run. Follow on screen instructions. You may need to reboot. After completion, use Windows Explorer to verify that everything has been copied. Power down, remove the old HD, relocate IDE cable connector of the old HD to the 40Gb, reconnect your CD/DVD, and place back the jumper of the 40Gb. On popwer up go again to your CMOS/BIOS to verify that the 40Gb & the CD are detected. Save & exit, reboot.

You can always parition the drive, and install both Ubuntu and XP (dual boot).

Yes, you will be able to access the files (providing the drive isn't totally crashed), although Ubuntu may not "know" what the files are.
