49.2c05 is a communication error. the 13.12 is a jam error. try upgrading the firmware with the duplexer not installed. firmware can be found at www.hp.com
Usually for HP printers not being recognized because they loose their IP address on the network or the computer can't see it.
What you can do is completley uninstall the HP software for the Officejet 8600, then go to HP.com lookup the officejet 8600 under Support > Download Drivers. download the latest full installation then run the install. When it ask you how to install it do the custom install and then only select the things you want to install.
When it ask you to do the eprint set up you can skip that part. also once install try running the HP updates for find any Network fixes or and Firmware updates.

You've done everything I would have done and more. How about you installing a DOA duplexer. At this point I would change it again. Is there another printer that you can swap duplexers with? There is a paper path sensor test (letter H) and manual sensor test . I don't know if the Component test checks the duplexer, but you should be able to find out. Is the printer still under warranty? Can you call HP or are you an HP tech and you can call 2nd level support. Just a thought....when you run a Config sheet, does it show the duplexer?
What is the code? This unit does not have a fan in the duplexer nor for the duplexer. The 9500 has a fan housing but there was never a fan put in by the design team. Give the code and I look it up to see the problem.
If you really have an HP 4350dtn (d = duplexer), then the duplexer is not connected correctly. Look at the back of the printer for the duplexer. It prtrudes from the back drop down tray and is used to print on both sides. I would pull it out and push it back in to make sure all connections are tight.
Tray number 1 is the manual feed tray in the front of the unit.
In Vista the default s the duplexer is "not installed". Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Printers, double-click on the Deskjet, Printers, Properties, Device Settings and set the duplexer to "Installed".
If the duplexer prints the back side upside down in Vista once it is enabled you can get a patch as described here.

duplexing has to do with sending and receiving data at the same time. there is also half duplex mode: is where the device can send and receive but not at the same time. try going to start, control panel, printer faxes, find your printer , right click and enter printing prefrences.there may be a tab that says finishing. click this tab and make sure you checkmark print on both sides.
please let me know the outcome if that doesnt fix it i will check into that printer a little more. just another note vista is alittle quircky still so make sure the drivers are updated and vista is updated.
First, the machine always prints the first page first. Make sure you have the right driver (4 plus and not 4)and check the settings in the device settings of your printer driver on the pc. Also make sure the duplex unit is for the 4 plus and not the 4.
