DVDs are encoded with a "Region Code" to allow studios to control release dates around the world. Hong Kong Region Code is 3, UK is 2. Your player will not play back Region 2 DVDs that you are purchasing or renting in UK. It will work fine with Region Code 3 DVDs I would bet.

Sorry to deliver the bad news.

DVD region codes are a DRM technique designed to allow motion picture studios to
control aspects of a release, including content, release date, and price,
according to the region. DVD video discs may be encoded with a region code
restricting the area of the world in which they can be played.
It is therefore this US Association that is responsible for the RPC system that
effectively divides the world into six regions for the purposes of controlling
and manipulating distribution within the global DVD market.
There are six different official regions and two informal variations.[citation
needed] DVD discs may use one code, a combination of codes (Multi-Region), most
codes (Region 0) or every code/no codes (Region All). The commercial DVD player
specification requires that a player to be sold in a given place not play discs
encoded for a different region; however, region-free DVD players are also
commercially available. In addition, many DVD players can be modified to be
region-free, allowing playback of all discs. Region code Area 0 Informal term meaning "worldwide". Region 0 is not an official setting; discs that bear the region 0 symbol either have no flag set or have region 1-6 flags set. 1 United States, Canada, Bermuda, U.S. territories 2 Europe (except Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus), Middle East, Egypt, Japan, South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, Greenland 3 Southeast Asia, South Korea, Republic of China (Taiwan), Hong Kong, Macau 4 Mexico, Central America, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Oceania 5 Afghanistan, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Africa (except Egypt, South Africa, Swaziland, and Lesotho), Central and South Asia, Mongolia, North Korea 6 People's Republic of China, Hong Kong 7 Reserved for future use (found in use on protected screener copies of MPAA-related DVDs and "media copies" of pre-releases in Asia) 8 International venues such as aircraft, cruise ships, etc. ALL Region ALL discs have all 8 flags set, allowing the disc to be played in any locale on any player.

What does RC 1 mean

RC means REGION CODE - Depending on the numbering, it means that your DVD will only play in countries designated by the code.

Example

RC 1 means Region Code 1...... This disc will play in dvd players in Canada, United States, U.S Territories , Bermuda.

RC 2 = Western Europe, incl. United Kingdom, and Central Europe; Western Asia; including Iran, Israel and Turkey, Egypt; Japan, South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho; French overseas territories

RC 3 = Southeast Asia; South Korea; Taiwan; Hong Kong; Macau

RC 4 = Mexico, Central and South America; Caribbean; Australia; New Zealand; Oceania;

RC 5 = Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Continent of Africa, excluding Egypt, South Africa, Swaziland, and Lesotho; Central and South Asia, Mongolia, North Korea.

RC 6 = People's Republic of China, Hong Kong

RC 7 = Reserved for future use (found in use on protected screener copies of MPAA-related DVDs and "media copies" of pre-releases in Asia)

RC 8 = International venues such as aircraft, cruise ships, etc.[1]
RC ALL means all 8 flags are set and can play on ANY player
0 or no region means no flag is set can be played anywhere or flags 1-6.

I hope this helps.

DVD video discs may be encoded with a region code restricting the area of the world in which they can be played. Discs without region coding are called all region or region 0 discs.
