6 long beeps Dell GX280

Please help auntie! I have four PCs model RB-DT-OL-Dell GX280 – they are fairly thin and light, you can open them like a suitcase. They worked just fine, then all of a sudden I’ve heard 6 long beeps on startup of one PC, and nothing was on screen. Fan became noisy, like vacuum cleaner, and moved so violently, I was scared away. I googled out one advice – to disconnect bios battery for 10 minutes and then put it back. Computer worked well for about 30 minutes, then again screen turned black and fan moved too fast. I put that pc aside and used hd for another computer. But in several days a second gx280 gave me exactly same problem with 6 long beeps, and soon I noticed that fan gets a little noisy on the third one. It’s getting serious now. Any ideas? Please.

Hello,

You may have some machines with the bad capacitor problem. Check out saome pictures from my web site at www.ccl-la.com/badcaps.htm Open your computers and see if you have any capacitors that look like the pictures. The Dell GX270's and the GX280's have the problem. There are several places on the internet that can repair your boards if you find that this is the problem. I hope this helps.

The only thing I can think of is that you might have some muck under the keyboard. See if you can get someone to clean out the inside of your keyboard. Hope this helps.

Memory upgrade on gx280 beeps on boot but doesn't start. memory beeps 1 234 5 6

When your computer emits beeps when you power on the computer, it's usually means that you have a memory issue. Try re-seating the memory modules and power on the computer. If you have more the one module, insert one at a time and power on the computer. The other issue is if that model supports 4 gig memory.

Dell optiplex GX280, beep one long, follow by 3 more beeps, then two more.

This is a motherboard problem, if the video Graphics Card is a plug in remove it and test as you go, unplug hard drive, and any other hardware, if at the end of it no change, motherboard will more than likely need to be replaced.

Beeps 6x

POST ("power on self test") codes for the Dell GX280 are in a format of n-n-n as in 3-1-2. This would sound like 3 beeps, followed by 1 beep and finally 2 beeps. If you're not paying attention, that 3-1-2 beep code could sound like 6 simple beeps.

Dell has a page for the GX280 dedicated to Troubleshooting Tools and Utilities. There's a great deal of information on it - but the POST codes you're looking for are explained in detail about mid-way down under "Beep Codes" This document and associated links should go a long way to help you properly diagnose the problem with your GX280.

Please take a minute to rate this reply if it was helpful to you. Good luck!

Six beeps at post and no joy with boot up

The exact meaning of the beeps for Dell depends on their... rhythm.

http://www.nullamatix.com/dell-diagnostic-beep-code-troublshooting-chart/

Six beeps might indicate a simple CMOS failure caused by a bad battery, which is easy to replace.

I had 1 long beep, 3 faster beeps, then 2 beeps *I think*, and also my fan was going crazy fast - like someone else said "a vacuum cleaner"...
Well, I reseated the memory and problem was gone - it did seem like the memory was kind of "loose" - perhaps from shipping (bought this used).
The link to Dell's website was good for the beeps AND the "ABCD" codes reading on the back. Thanks very much! God Bless.
