I have switched out the unit with a known working cd player(in my "spare" S90) and it does not work in the "new" car...I'm wondering, if there is a CODE just to activate the cd player part of the unit. I looked at the specs for this vehicle in 1998, and the cd player is listed as an OPTION, although I do have the 816 unit which INCLUDES the cd player. 3 items were listed as OPTIONS : cd player, shift differential, and the ambient outside temperature reader, along with the heated leather seats(which mine DOES NOT have either). Please help.

your going to have to call up your local volvo dealer and give them your vin number and they can look it up for you. You can try using radio-code.com but i wouldnt recomend it. Your best bet is calling your local volvo dealer and they will help you out.
SOURCE: both front heated seats not working
Page 43 in the document linked to below is a wiring diagram of the heated seats in an 850. If you're lucky some wires have come loose and are hanging under the seats, if you're unlucky you might have to do some shredding of the seats in order to replace broken parts. If so there is a fairly inexpensive repair kit made specifically for this purpose, but I don't have the part number available right now. Arm yourself with a multimeter and get to it!
Good luck!

The SC-816 is made by MITSUBISHI and the code cannot be calculated for free from anywhere on the Internet.
Try your Volvo Main Dealer....or a Decoding service who will plug it into a laptop to read/recode the memory chip (EEPROM)
Howver many Volvo Dealers offer the code for free provided you can quote the car VIN number and the radio serial number

If the display says "Off" the radio is locked from incorrect code input.
You need to leave the key in the accessory position with the radio on (display reads 'Off') for about two hours.
After that it should ask for he code again. You have three tries before it locks again.
Some radios are different, but typically you use the knob to adjust the numbers, push the knob in to move to the next number
