I bought a 2466WX tender along with a 2035 Engine. I need help in figuring out HOW this is supposed to work. I have a Lionel Transformer with "Whistle" button. How does that translate into power to the relay in the tender to produce the sound? I see that it has TWO rollers for the center rail. WHAT activates the RELAY? Any help or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated! Dan ([email protected])

Answer a number of questions:
Is the tranformer power adequate for the train and is it a working tranformer?
Will the train run by connecting the wires directly to the two points of the train (wheels and center rail connector)?
Are the tracks new?
Is the lockon new?

I have had the same problem with my polar express, which i just bought recently. Having to send it to the USA from the UK would be very expensive so i decided to open it up myself. The tamper proof screws were a bit of a problem getting into it. I ground down an old screw driver into the triangle shape to undo them. I then replaced them with self taping srews the same size.
The Problem I found was simple, there is an internal (250V, 8Amp) fuse soldered onto the red wire on the secondary winding of the transformer. The red wire going from the transformer to the PCB, the fuse has black heatshrink over it.
There is no room inside the housing of the controller to fit a fuse holder. I fitted a box on the side of it with a panel mount fuse holder. drilled a hole through the housing, fitted longer red wires, so they could go through to the terminations on the back of the fuse holder.
At least now I can change it simply if it blows again.
hope this is of help to you.

replace the button with a new one just remember which wire goes to which terminal. you will need a soldering iron and electronic solder to do this trick , also make sure you un plug the transformer. by any chance you got any n-scale trains you want to get rid of . If you do send me the info @ [email protected] I'am a disabled veteran with little funds.

This is just a guess but it may have powered headlights or other lights on the train at one time, some of then even had a smoke producing device on them.

It sounds as though you may have two defective transformers. Lionel has reported problems with some of their smaller transformers. I would have the transformers and the engines checked by a Lionel service station or contact their customer service department for help.

I found the answer to my own question. The Whistle Tender works by the transformer providing a low voltage Direct Current (DC) to the third-rail track (the engine power is AC). This activates the Relay inside the Tender which then connects the AC track voltage to a small AC motor, which powers a fan which blows air through the whistle. The reason mine didn't run? Bad bushes in the motor. Fixed, and working!!
