I guess the printer works fine when printing from pc. In this case plz read the manual. It explains the settings for the fax connection. You might have chosen a wrong fax setting. manual can be downloaded here: http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/Public_s/index.html
(choose your country and your machine). Here you can find a faq too.
In case the printer doesnt print anything (even no document) from pc or doesnt do copies) it could be that your printhead is clogged.

The in use alarm appears to be related to fax reception and printing. There are some options below that you could try:- Memory Reception If the machine receives a fax under one of the following conditions, it will not be able to print the received fax and will store it in its memory. The In Use/Memory lamp is lit and Received in memory is displayed on the LCD. When the problem is resolved as described, the fax stored in memory is printed automatically.
Ink has run out: Replace the FINE Cartridge.
Routine Maintenance Note
You can set the machine to forcibly print a received fax even if the ink has run out.
However, part or all of the fax may not be printed since the ink has run out.
Also, the contents of the fax will not be stored in memory.
If the ink has already run out, we recommend that OFF be selected for Auto print in FAX user settings to store the received fax in memory and print the fax manually after replacing the FINE Cartridge. After you replace the FINE Cartridge and select ON for Auto print, the fax stored in memory will be printed automatically.
Paper has run out: Load the paper and press the OK button.
A different size of paper from that specified by Page size is loaded:
Load the same size of paper as that specified by Page size, then press the OK button.
Page size is set to other than A4, 8.5"x11"(LTR), or Legal (or 8.5"x14"):
Set Page size to A4, 8.5"x11"(LTR), or Legal (or 8.5"x14").
Media type is set to other than Plain paper:
Set Media type to Plain paper.
You pressed the Stop button to cancel printing of a fax: Press the FAX button
Alternatively turn the printer off, open the devices and printers section of Control Panel, right click on your printer and select "see what's printing" and left click on this. A window will pop up which may or may not contain a list of documents. If it does these must be cancelled (Menu - Printer - Cancel all documents). Once all documents have gone from the list turn the printer on and try to print.
Other than the above suggestions I would need to know more about your OS and exact problem. Hope this helps.
If your Canon MX-310 has been set up to print faxes as they are received, then what is actually in memory is a "received fax report". If you select a particular fax in this report, it will print the first page of the fax to remind you of the content.
Your Canon MX-310 will store fax documents in memory if:
Issue:
ERROR LCD: WAITING FOR REPORT Solution:
Set [AUTO PRINT RX] to ON (MX300 / MX310)
AUTO PRINT RX
When
[AUTO PRINT RX] is set to [OFF], incoming received faxes will be
temporarily stored to memory and transaction reports (TX, RX and
Activity) remain in memory. The default setting is [ON], which means
incoming received faxes and transaction reports will automatically
print.
The fax machine will not automatically print a received fax and will store it in memory in the following conditions.
Ink is low or has run out
The paper size and type is not set correctly
Paper has run out
The Output Tray is closed
To set AUTO PRINT to ON, please follow these steps.
Press the <FAX> button to enter the Fax menu.
Press the <Menu> button. [FAX SETTINGS] is displayed
Press the left or right arrow button to select [RX SETTINGS] , then press <OK> two times.
Press the left arrow to select [ON], then press <OK>.
Note: When AUTO PRINT RX is set ON, a sub-menu will appear to PRINT WHEN NO INK.
At sub-menu PRINT WHEN NO INK, decide if you'd like the machine to continue to print incoming received faxes if ink is low.
CAUTION:
When this option is set ON, the fax machine will not monitor the ink
level of the ink cartridges. If ink is low or out, received faxes will
print with streaks or blank. Furthermore, once the fax is printed, it
will be deleted from memory.
To print received faxes when ink is low or out, press the left or right arrow to select [ON] and then press <OK>.
To
store received faxes in memory when ink is low or out, press the left
or right arrow to select [OFF] and then press <OK>.
Press the <Stop/Reset> repeatedly to return to Fax standby mode.
Your Brother machine is designed to stop ALL printing operations (printing from the pc, printing received faxes and printing copies or reports) when any of the ink cartridges are empty. This is to ensure the life of the print head and maintain premium print quality. If the unit were to continue printing, print jobs and cleaning cycles would suction air from the dry cartridge and damage the printhead. Even if you print in black only or change the print settings to MONO or GRAYSCALE to avoid printing in color, the programmed cleaning cycles would still suction the dry cartridge, because they are programmed to clean ALL the ink nozzles.
The only way to continue printing is to replace the empty ink cartridge or cartridges.
While memory is available, black and white faxes will continue to be received into memory. If a color fax is being received, the Brother machines HANDSHAKE will request the fax be sent as black and white fax.
All faxes received into memory will automatically print once the ink cartridge is replaced.
NOTE: Brother strongly recommends that customers do not use generic ink or refill their Brother ink cartridges. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability since the ink formulation in genuine Brother ink cartridges prevent smearing and clogging of the print head. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that was caused by the use of unauthorized third party ink and/or cartridges.
RECEIVED IN MEMORY
If the machine receives a fax under one of the following conditions, the machine will not be able to print the received fax and will store it in its memory.
When the problem is resolved as described, the fax stored in memory is printed automatically.
Ink is low or has run out while receiving a fax: replace the FINE Cartridge.
Paper size/type setting is incorrect: correct the paper size/type setting.
Paper has run out while receiving a fax: load the paper and press the OK button.
Output Tray is closed: open it. OFF is selected for AUTO PRINT RX: select ON.
You pressed the Stop/Reset button to cancel printing of a fax: press the FAX button.
This could be very simple. Check to be EXTRA sure that your USB line is NOT plugged into the fax line. (There's a little phone icon). That's what happened to me....boy am i dumb!
I am able to send a fax just cannot receive. I have a new cartridge and the sent material is legible. Just cannot get machine to receive.
