If you are still able to read from the drive, i would copy all of your important files off of it and replace with a new one.

There is a big problem with newer conponents and Win XP versions prior to SP2. Especially with newer motherboards.
You have to make a bootable SP2 disk if you don't already have one. To do this use the slipstream proceedure specified on the Ms website. Many other websites describe the process with easier language.
Slipstreaming is a common practice now. Essentially, you copy your original install disk to the c: drive then download SP2 to C: drive then download the slipstream utility from MS. Running the slipstream utility then inserts the proper drivers (ide and HD drivers too) into the licensed copy you have. You then create a bootable disk from the slipstreamed files you have.
This approach is resolving alot of blue STOP errors and SMART errors.
ALSO, you want to make sure you are installing any drivers provided by the MB manufacturer AND Drive maker.
Good Luck

First before replaceing the drive try to start in safe mode, if you can start it in safe mode do so with network support and go to malyware bytes and download their software to remove the bugs you have on the computer run disk cleanup and disk defragment as well, this is caused by some of the bugs that have come out. If it indeed is the drive out your in trouble if you have not backed it up, but post here to let me know and I will help you if I can, also please rate me if this helped.

Have you tried turning off/on again your laptop?
If you did but still getting the same message am afraid you will have to replace the hard disk

Hi
Thank you for your query
From what you are describing something called SMART which resides on your motherboard has kicked in.
This little utillity will kick in just before your hard drive is about to fail, allowing you time to copy data across
I would not waste time, please copy your data as soon as possible and then replace your hard drive
I hope this has been useful
