This is a simple, USB based network interface card (NIC). There's little to be changed as it is built with tiny surface mount devices that can not dissipate heat nearly as well standard through hole components can. Boosting voltages, etc will only shorten the life of the device.

By placing the WNA1100 at the end of the cable, you are free to orient it in the best position to maximize capture of the WiFi signal, regardless of the position or location of the computer.
