Dryer squealing? my dryer ( maytag model number mde308dayw) is squealing now which is the first in a while (two years). its a bad squeel (not a shake) for 5 seconds, then quits, then 2 minutes later it squeals again but for longer period of time, then it quits, then a minute later it squeals again. these sounds are not low sounds, they are lout high pitched sounds. Any help would be appreciated.

Squealing is mainly caused when the wrong vent pipe is used resulting in the wheel next to the heater element getting overheated. Rigid metal flex pipe is recommended to prevent this with some Maytag models. A safe lube for appliance rollers is Zoomspout oil. Post your model number for a better anwer.

A loud squeal is usually caused by either an idler pulley bearing. a drum roller bearing or a loose belt.

If you do repair it yourself.... do yourself a HUGE favor and either take a picture of the belt routing or draw a belt routing diagram BEFORE dis-assembly.

This squeaky sound your hearing is usually the idler pulley, idler pulley shaft, but also can be the motor or the drum roller bearings. Usually if the drum roller bearings are bad the dryer will thump as it rotates.

Since it is squealing at this time when you have the repairs done that you replace the belt that is item 21 this link:

I recommend that if you do the repairs that you replace the idler pulley, the drum rollers, and the belt.

i would assume that either the rear roller(located directly atop your heater, or yout idler pulley has gone bad , parts are probly about $40.. not a bad repair, you can probly find a how to on you tube
