I can't find a manual for that exact model, but I found a service manual and instruction manual for a 11206630. They will, hopefully, be close to your machine. Normanlly, when the model numbers are that close, the manuals are very close as well.

It's possible that the needle is too small for the size of thread you are using. Also make sure thread is not wrapped around the needle and that the needle is properly seated in the needle bar. It's also possible that the machine needs to be timed and serviced to correct this problem. Is it possible to get the users manual from your MIL? It would have the information you need reguarding needle sizes and threading, etc.

Those books are long since out of print. Try contacting sewing machine stores who stock old instruction books. Many shops do this. Or try eBay.
