There is no scanning of a word document - you are scanning an image. If that image is a page with words printed on it or a picture , it doesn't mater to the scanner, to it all are pictures. So in the end you have a picture of the scanned image - in your case a picture of the page. Since you can't edit a picture with word you must convert that picture into an word document. For that you use an OCR program

This printer has an OCR program in it, but you must activate and guide it yourself, it won't do the job automatically. To learn how to use it launch the installed HP Solution Center from your pc, it's a part of the driver that should have been installed with it.
You need to install OCR by Iris software. This will allow you to scan and convert it to rich text file (.rtf) /editable text. Some HP AIO like HP c309a have free basic OCR software. you can download c309a full feature driver and software and just get the OCR software.
Not sure about your model but have you tried the HP website for downloads? One more possible option, sometimes going to control panel and deleting the printer and its software under programs and also the printer, restarting the computer and then having it install itself works. I know these are frustrating problems. Hope it helps.
You can download installation software for most older HP products at hp.com. Go to the support and downloads area. Make sure you know the model number [deskjet f4180 works] and your version of the Windows operating system. I just tried this and it works for your printer. If you really, really need the actual CD, I think HP sells them in the HP parts store.
It is important that the item you scan comes in close contact with the scanner glass. If the resulting scanned image is not clear, check to see that the item is in full contact with the scanner glass.
The scanner uses optical character recognition (OCR) to convert text on a page to text that you can edit on your computer.
If you scan text but cannot edit it, make sure that you make the following selections during scanning:
Scanned text might not appear on your computer exactly as it appeared on the original, especially if the original contains faint or smudged text. For example, some characters might be incorrect or missing. As you edit the text, compare the scanned text against the original, and then make corrections as necessary.
To change text scanning options, click the Scan Document Settings button in the initial What are you scanning? screen.
The OCR software is installed by default when you install the HP Scanning software during scanner setup. If you use the Custom option when installing the software, you can choose not to install the OCR software. Try reinstalling the software using the default install options.
