This commonly happens based on the source. For example, if your receiver looks at the source that is analog, it will use two channels, the two front left and right speakers. However, some receivers, such as a Denon, have a 5 channel stereo feature that will utilize all 5 speakers (L&R Front, Center, L&R Rear). If you are connecting a DVD player, often you need to configure the source appropriately. If you are connecting using the RCA cables, it will be stereo. If you are using Optical or Coaxial connection, you can enjoy Dolby Digital, but may need to specify in the receivers setup to use these audio source inputs. If you are connecting via HDMI, early versions only supported Dolby Prologic, but you occasionally hear mono sound from rear speakers. Without knowing more about your equipment, what source you are hoping to hear and how you are connected, it will be difficult to pinpoint your cause, but hopefully this helps your understanding to enable you look for the appropriate cause.

Instructions for Windows 7, although others should be similar
- Click on the windows start button (Lower left hand corner)

- Double click on the speaker, and disable it.
2) This option requires a bit more work, but will leave everything else enabled.
- Double click on a speaker that doesn't have the meter moving

- click the test button. If you hear sound, then this is the speaker setup you want. If not, try the next one.
- close that pop-up window for the individual speaker, and go back to the main sound menu (Playback Tab)
- single click on the speaker that works, and towards the bottom of the playback tab is an option to set it to default. Click on that.

If you would like to bypass the auto setup which is apparently the root cause, use a test cd/dvd for your test tones. The auto setup while convenient is not the optimal way to get the best result as the test tones it uses are bandwidth limited pink noise. If you would like to use the auto calibrate however, it's likely needing repair to do so.

Review the cable setup for the DVD player since it was identified as the source of the problem. Best to unplug and plug in the cables to ensure they contact the back of the receiver's RCA jacks. Redo the microphone setup for Audyssey 2EQ calibration. A good chance that it is the cable that may have caused the malfunction and loss of sound from the speakers. The cables can come loose during setup and not plugged all the way to the back of the RCA jacks or a defective cable causing signal loss.
