Press the button and pull the axle out as far as it will go. At the button end is a metal collar - hold this firmly and push the button, without pushing the axle back in. This will loosen the 2 ball bearings at the other end of the axle and you can pull it out. It is a bit fiddly but i just managed it after the same problem.
