Downloading digital video from my JVC GRD-290U camcorder to my Dell Dimension E520 computer with Vista operating system
My computer will not recognize my camcorder when I hook it up with the usb cable. The camcorder instructions say I should be able to download with USB. My computer does not have a firewire conneciton so how can I download my video?

I had this same issue. I solved it. The USB cable will NOT work to transfer video. You need a IEEE-1395 fire wire cable. I purchased the internal card and cable for under $20.00 for my DELL computer direct from dell. After you connect your camcorder to your computer, I clicked on windows photo gallery. Then in top left corner, click file and "import from camera or scanner. Your camcorder must be on video mode and play mode. Your computer should recognize the camcorder, click on it and then it will give you options, like you can upload and record direct onto DVD. I liked the option of uploading manually because if there are blank sections on the DV tape, the computer will stop uloading. Hope this helps.
Hook up camera let windows say find new hardware. FOllow the prompts. Acording to Sony Xp has the driver already unless it is a 64 bit. See Below:
The drivers needed to connect most Sony® cameras and camcorders to a computer are already included in the Windows Vista and Windows XP operating systems. With these drivers, you should be able to connect and transfer files to a computer. Note: If the your camera or camcorder is not recognized by the computer when connected, you may need an updated driver.
I disagree VERY much with Bubbabear64. I tried what he said and I had lots of problems. The computer wouldn't import and sometimes it wouldn't recognize the camera. I installed the 2 programs that came with the camera on the CD, and all of a sudden it worked great. So install the audio driver and the picture importer on the JVC disk that came with your camera.
I am not sure. But I believe the camcorder has to be on when you connect to the computer.
and I assume you use firewire for this particular camcorder.
I too once had this problem when I used Windows Vista.
If you too use Vista, try it with Windows XP.
u need the dv cable out from the camera , to usb going in to the computer and more than likely the drivers that will probably be needed. Also you will need a certain software program that is compatible...usually comes with the driver.
