Not filtering I have a Pentair Tagelus TA 60D filter that worked well for about 5 years. Two years ago, I started getting cloudy water; so I changed the sand at the beginning of the season last year. The swimming season was really lost for me. The water never cleared. Spent $ on pool "experts" and chemicals: algaecide, shock, filtering aids and more shock. Nothing seemed to help. Ran the pump almost constantly all season, but water remained cloudy. I did notice that when I vaccumed the pool, the water coming back into the pool through the return jets was cloudy, often green. Two pool experts said the problem was simply that I wasn't getting any filtration. They would have replaced the unit, but I decided to try to handle it myself. I went out and bought some pool sand this weekend and took the filter apart today. I was expecting to find a damaged lateral or something of that nature. Everything looked good. I did notice that the sand was very dirty and green near the top, but almost pristine as I neared the laterals. I am a little reluctant just to put in more sand and close it up expecting to get a different result this year. Any ideas? Might it be worthwhile to change the 6-way valve assembly? Can filtered and non-filtered water mix in the valve. I did test the valve under low pressure with my garden hose, and water seemed to take the proper pathways; but I am not sure what might happen with pressure (Usually operate around 20 - 25). I have a 30000 gal inground pool and a 1HP pump. Everything else seems to be operating fine. As I said, the pool was great for several years, which included one previous change of filter sand. Only had the really bad problems just last year.

You can not backwash a catridge filter. If cleaning them doesn't work they need to be replaced. A common 'issue' with cartridge filters - replacing the expensive elements every few years. There is no other way to clean them that will not in turn destroy the filter material in the process so new ones are your only choice.

Total alkalinity can be lowered by adding muriatic acid or sodium bisulfate. Acid may be added in doses of up to 1 quart per 10,000 gallons. Total alkalinity tests and further required additions of acid can be made every 2 hours.

SOURCE: My Whisperflo pump has a leak in my PVC pipe from

The correct way to repair this is to repipe the line. If you can't do that, your local hardware may have an epoxy putty that will hold against water pressure. I would only recommend that if the leak is between two pieces of PVC piping. If the leak is where the pump meets the PVC, I would recommend repiping the discharge.

SOURCE: Do I need a pressure tank with a Pentair Water 3/4Hp Pres Wtr System 3075Ss Utility Pumps?

Depends on your application. If you are using it to provide water to a residence or other on/off use, you need a pressure tank and a pressure switch to control it. If you are filling a open air tank, no pressure tank needed. If you are just pumping water out of a well and directly to an ditch type irrigation system no tank needed.

Ph level is at 'ideal' chlorine level is at 3.0 but the pool water is still cloudy. Please help?

The cloudiness could be suspended particles or algae. Use an algae k i l l er as recommended, then a flocculant (water clarifier) as recommended, then vacuum the pool bottom and run the filter overnight.

After that check the ph, alkali level, chlorine level, and adjust as needed. That should do it.

that is usually caused by damage to the fingers (laterals) on the standpipe. most times this damage comes from improper winterization or when sand is changed by non professional

Change sand in tagelus filter

So you have a "TA" filter. Which size?
It does not matter really, otherwise I would have been able to know how much sand you you have to remove and how much to put back in.
Anyway, To change sand you have to remove the MultiPort Dial valve on top.
Then, you can either unplumb the filter and roll it over on its side and using a garden hose, start washing the sand out or use a shop vac, with keeping it upright.
Whatever you do NOT damage the laterals on the bottom of the filter. When refilling with sand you want to make sure all the laterals are undamaged and in the down position. Always fill the filter half full of water, at least over the laterals by a few inches, to keep the sand from damaging the laterals while re-filling the filter with sand. Make sure you use pool filter sand and not play sand! And... cover the stand pipe!!! Use duct tape or some kind of covering (spout cut off a water bottle then covering the pipe). Otherwise you will get sand into the standpipe and into the laterals, then you have another problem.

Pump is blowing cloudy water back into pool

Cloudy water is the bane of sand filters!. I suggest letting filter run day and night. Do not backwash until the pressure rises 8 - 10 pounds above clean starting pressure. Do not try to vacuum or stir up the sediment. when water clears, vacuum to waste. Keep the hose running while vacuuming. A dirty filter is a better filter (up to a point). At a higher pressure the filter will trap more of the fine particles that are clouding your water.

Pentair Minimax has worked correctly for 5 years. Now is comes on and the heater starts up for maybe 30 seconds and shuts off for a minute or two. It cycles like this for a really long time... a couple...

Usually this means that the flue temperature sensor indicates too high a temperature. this is usually caused by too low water flow through the heater and therefore both the water and the flue temperature is too hot. You should check all the baskets, the pump impeller, the filter and any return devices to make sure water can flow at full rate. It is unlikely but maybe the flue temperature or control board is defective. If all else fails you may be able to call the Pentair technical support line to help diagnose the problem. I hop this helps.

Water comeing out cloudy and makeing suds in pool

There could be a few things causing these problems. How old is the sand in the filter? Filter sand looses its filtering ability after 3-5 years and needs to be replaced. If the sand needs to be replaced, make sure you get actual pool filter sand. A lot of big box and home improvement stores sell play sand as filter sand. That will cause your pool to stay cloudy and never clear up. If the sand is less that 3-5 years old, you may need to clean it with a liquid filter cleaner that is poured through the skimmer. This works quite well!

Another issue causing the cloudiness and bubbles could be the type of chemicals you are using. I know that shock from big box and home improvement stores cause the water to be cloudy. Algaecides from these stores also cause foaming.

Pressure doesn't last & seems to blow out cloudy, dingy water

if you are on city treated water, sand will last aprox. 7 years, if on well water typically 3 - 5 years. so yes, could be a sand issue. also, double check that the there is no water trickling out the backwash / drain outlet of the filter, this could indicate that the diverter valve gasket (spider gasket) could be worn and cause sand from the filter to flow to the pool. this is a common problem if you move the position selector often with the pump still running - the pump should always be off when moving the handle. good luck!
