You can set the Toner Save setting in the printer properties tab of your printer in the Windows or MAC environment. Your user manual does show where they are located. http://download.brother.com/welcome/doc002127/ZLe_UG_eng.pdf You can try this link to download the user manual from the Brother's website. It is a free PDF download.
If you have an HL-1440 printer, it would be cheaper to purchase a newer model printer. The cost for a diagnostic fee and the parts (if they can still be found), would be close to the amount of a brand new printer that works even faster than the 15 ppm of the 1440. I used to have a number of 1440's and have since upgraded them to HL5240's and LOVE the newer machines.
There are a number of quality models from brother that can replace the HL1440 nicely.
If you are set on having someone fix the machine, you would need to look in the yellow pages online or offline - for computer repair companies. You would need to contact them to see if they actually do on site repairs, since most do not do so these days. In larger cities, there may be a listing for printer repair companies as well.
