Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo management program such as Picasa ( http://picasa.google.com ).

SOURCE: communication error when uploading pictures on computer

I had the same problem. My problem was that there were more than 1,000 images stored on the memory card. Once I deleted some of the images from the camera memory card, I was able to download pictures again.

SOURCE: camera reads communication error when trying to

I BELIEVE THE REASON IS THE TYPE OF SD CARD.
THERE ARE SD AND SDHC. IF YOU ARE USING SDHC.
I BET THE ONE CARD THAT DOESNT READ IS AN HC. THIS IS ALSO TRUE WITH OLDER CARD READERS. I HAVE AN OLDER AND NEWER CARD READER.
I JUST HAPPENED TO PUT AN OLDER SD CARD IN MY NEW POWERSHOT SD1300 AND IT READS FINE, ALL NEW CARDS SDHC WONT READ.
I BELIEVE SD IS UP TO 2GIGS AND SDHC IS 4GIGS AND HIGHER.

SOURCE: i keep getting a communication

There are a couple of things you should try, remove the memory card from the camera and try connecting, if you get no error then chances are your memory card is corrupted.
If you still get an error then start looking at the cable you are using, try another if you can get one, cables are easily damaged.
You should also try checking the camera settings for USB connection and make sure it is set to Mass storage

Pros avoid this very common problem by using a card reader instead of the camera...you should too. typrice_23.jpg

I've connected my canon powershot sx120 is to my pc using its usb cable.. and when i've switched it on, it stated "communication error" on its screen.. i've tried switching it on and off again, removing...

hey,
I've searched just now the web for answers for the same problem (thus finding your question). I also have Canon Powershot SX 120 is.

In the end I found in the Australian Canon support site that stated that "communication error" means you just have too many pictures on your camera card.
They suggest, as many people here on this site recommend, using a card reader rather than connecting the camera straight to the computer.
But I had an urgency to download pictures now, so I just erased some old pictures that I didn't need and it worked. I had to go under 3000 pics.

hope this helps!

Israel.
